Massive Sheltie Pants!

I sometimes thin Deska's pants - I thin it shorter on the top layer and at the top of his butt and as I get lower down the back and underneath I thin it longer (does that make sense).

This year tho I furminated the hell out of them. So every night I game them a furminator brush for a couple of weeks. It thinned it out well, although the coat came back thick again. Best to get onto it before spring hits, I left it until Deska started shedding his winter coat and it was a nightmare, though I would never get through it.

Lucky is great with his silky coat, and I can keep him under control, and he has a nice coat.

I think I have told lots of stories on Lady's butt. Her coat is coarse, and very dense without the second coat, when the second coat comes in watch out. I have to trim her every two weeks, pads, butt, etc.. to keep up with her "HIGHNESS". All that I can say its an on going thing. Cut, it grows, cut, it grows.

I don't use a thinning shears back there on the pants, scissors with rounded tips.

Ooo yes...we lovingly call this "bed butt"

I spray the area with water mixed with conditioner...then brush, brush..comb..then the thinning shears if need be...especially on Abby, that girl has the crazy fur!!

I always brush them really good before bathing, I figure why wash more fur then I have too..LOL The warm water and bathing seems to loosen the fur..especially during the big blow!!

You use thinning shears because you want it thinned out without looking like its been cut. If you just the thinning you can achieve the look of under control without looking like we came at them with a weed wacker:lol:

so thinning shears is a type of scissor?

I also use a thinning shear on my shelties where the ears tip. I kind of hold the ear down in the tipping position and use the thinning shear to trim the hair at the bend.

Yes, thinning shears are a groomers best friend!

I use them on the ears (though I'm still perfecting the technique).

And I took the thinning shears to Indy's butt last night. I thought I was being pretty aggressive, but he still looks like a tub of lard!

His undercoat is so thick, and his overcoat is so short, with some wave, that it just seems to stick out sideways!

I think I need to use a hair iron on him! Does anybody know of any product to make the hair lie flat, instead of fluffy?
