Max Is Being Stubborn Today

Love Victoria Stillwell and positive training methods. She is on Animal Planet- the show is called It's Me or the Dog. currently it's on Sat. 8 pm ET. I have watched Cesar Millan's show, The Dog Whisperer as well. He has some good points- acting like the boss, walks to use up energy, etc. I don't believe in the jerking, choke chain stuff. and sorry to Chris or whoever recommended the Monks of New Skete but they do the same thing. They had a show on Animal Planet as well, Divine Canine, and while one of the monks (who has passed on, I believe) did recant the negative methods, they were still using choke chains on the show last year.

Chris

The Monks of New Skete, are due to come back on the air. Animal Planet is going to start them sometime within the next month or so.:biggrin2: Different styles of training are at times required for various breeds. :uhoh: But with the Sheltie, Calm and gentle does it all. Fear will get you nowhere with a Sheltie. This is what Chris is attempting to get through.

I have to say I haven't watched the program, but from both books I've read, they didn't use choke chains. The monks use a training collar, which is a nylon slip-type collar, very similar to a show lead. Also, what they recommend isn't jerking or yanking, but what they call a "leash pop." It involved a very short, attention-getting tug, very fast. In fact, they stress practicing it on your own arm so that you never yank or frighten, just refocus attention. :smile2:

Max

I wish I could walk Max, but can't because I wear leg braces and have poor balance to boot, but I have a frisbee that I'm going to start tossing to him. He has a "baby", one of those rope bones that's torn to shreds, LOL, and I throw that in the house and he has already learned the command fetch and bring, but drop is another story!

Sparky, my 6 year old adopted tri, has been trained so well and he will fetch anything you ask him to and bring it back without command and drop it at your feet! I love to see him run, his white ruff blowing out! He is so gorgeous!

Sounds like your furkids are getting loads of great exercise. I always tell the wounded soldiers that Layla visits that dogs don't care if you have braces, one leg, no legs, no fingers -- they love you just as you are!

New Training Book Came In The Mail

Just thought I'd let you all know that I received a book for training service dogs, but the basic obedience exercises can be used by anyone training their dogs.

The book is called Teamwork: A Dog Training Manual for People with Disabilities by Stewart Nordensson and Lydia Kelley. There is another book, Part 2, but it hasn't arrived yet.

The first book covers all angles of obedience with emphasis on tone of voice, and working with the dog off-leash. I tried their suggestions this morning with Max and he actually did better than if I was firm with him.

This book comes highly recommended by those who are disabled and are desiring to train a service dog for themselves (there is an abnormally long wait with service dog agencies). I figure if someone who is wheelchair bound, with limited body movements and no vocal abilities can train a dog, then so can I.

The New Book Must Be Helping Max

I keep thinking I'm dreaming and that I'll wake up and find Max as undisciplined as ever, but, he's like a new dog!

Yesterday afternoon I took him out in the yard, alone, and was working with him on come, fetch, bring, drop, sit, etc. and he did it without too many mistakes or distractions!

Smart dogs these Shelties, and so eager to please!

Miracles Can Happen

I'm so happy for you both! I've noticed that with Shelties, all of a sudden, they "get it." I took Layla to a puppy kindergarten class, and we learned "No! Leave it." (She isn't noise sensitive, so shaking a penny can wasn't a useful technique for not jumping, etc.) The trainer tried it twice, then I tried it. After class, we went on a walk, and she stopped to pounce on a piece of trash. I said, "No! Leave it." She's been letter perfect every since. :smile2: So don't worry -- Max will remember.

Good On Layla's Leave It!

Hey, they do eventually "get it!"

One thing Max is awful with is when someone comes to the door. He goes ballistic, but just a few moments ago, when the mailman rang the bell, Max barked a bit, but when I said "that will do, Max!", he stopped AND sat, LOL!

Since it's grey and rainy here today (Michigan holds the record for most grey days, LOL), we have to keep the kiddies inside. So we're working with all of them to only come to us when they need to go potty. Sparky is okay with this already and so is Disco, the choccie Lab-Sharpai mix, but Max is the only holdout.

We're trying to get them on a potty schedule, which we should have done from day one, but.......
