MDR1 - Ivermectin

Prayers for a speedy and complete recovery for Kairi and peace of mind for you. So sorry . Hang in there for your girl. :hugs

I am so sorry to hear and I am thinking about you and your baby. Having had only herding breeds -- Aussies and the sheltie and a herding shepherd mix I have been worried about this issue. With this reaction, 100% get the test. There is much research online about Ivermectin and similar. The collie people have worked on this issue for a very long time. I found a study that confirmed dogs with the mutation in BOTH the pair of genes rather than from just one parent which brings a lesser reaction. They studied dogs with Ivermectin versus the stuff in Sentinel. Same exact reaction for dogs with the mutation. Vets and the companies swear that heart-worm med levels are safe. Not so sure I believe that, though. Prayers for you.

Continuous prayers going out for Kairi's restored health.

Please continue to update us on how she is doing. Thank you.

I hope Kairi has a speedy recovery.

I just had Riley tested and he is MDR1 positive. I have been giving him Heartgard which has ivermectin but its at a low dose that is safe for herdind breeds. From what I have read, its a higher dose used to treat mange or if the dog gets into ivermectin based horse dewormer that can cause a reacton. I am going to quit giving heartworm medication in November and start up again in May when he goes for his annual vet check. In doing my research I thought it was interesting to find out that there were more drugs that just ivermectin that caused reactions.

I found that the Mini Aussie Rescue & Support (MARS) website had some good informatoin about MDR1. I ordered one of their MDR1 medical alert tags.

Thanks for all the support. Had a virtually sleepless night, was completely convinced that she had died during the night and the vet was just waiting for morning to tell me. Called the vet and the receptionist said that Kairi was about the same and that the vet will call me to give me a more detailed update. My mum is off today so is going in to sit with her if possible and get as much info as she can

I thought I would show you some photos of her, mostly because looking at them cheers me up:

The last one is her winning best in show at this tiny little agricultural show last Sunday. She's too small for real shows but she's so pretty that she always does well at agricultural shows.

I've been getting my own agility stuff built because there are no good classes in the area which is what all the other photos are

Not long after I wrote that my mum came in to say that she had died. I'm absolutely devastated. We went and got her and I sat with her in my arms for ages remembering everything wonderful about her. I've buried her out the back so we are never allowed to move house ever again. She's got her teddy that she got on the day she was born, her lead and collar, her best in show rosette and her favourite bone. She is beside her favourite plant where she can watch the others play. I don't even know what to think now, I just can't stop crying. There will never be another Kairi, she was really special

I am so very sorry to hear about Kairi. What a terrible way to lose your precious Sheltie. We all send you our love and hugs for healing. :hugs
