Megan is afraid of..

I have discovered in her short 5 1/2 months of life that she likes to have control over almost every situation, :rolleyes2:. Like most Shelties she is very smart and attempts to manipulate a situtaion to her advantage. She is still sweet as pie and quite funny with her vocalization and how she play talks with us.

I guess in order to get her to jump off the couch I am going to have to use tough love, with lots of praise after of course :lol:
 
Megan is still little and the babies need some time before they feel confident jumping.

Just wait a few months. She will figure it out. (I have to admit, I'll just bail Buffy out at that age.) Buffy's legs are so much stronger now than they were a few months ago.

Yeah I think of that also, is she too little to get down by herself or is it a confidence issue?

This morning I was making eggs and no matter how many times I put her on the couch, she ZOOMED off :lol:. But you're right she's just a baby and has little baby legs so do bail her out or let her jump??:confused2:

You said she zoomed off so she is jumping off the couch now? My rule of thumb has always been, if they can get up, they can get down. Until they can get there themselves, I help but once they are able to, I stop.

Haha, yes she jumped off the couch like it was nothing, (the smell of eggs being cooked). I have always thought the same as you, if she can get up she can get down, but I wanted to make sure she's not hurting her joints in the long term!?
 
Bailey is 8.5 months old and still does not know how to jump on and off the couches and beds. We have doggie stairs for our chihuahua, who has bad knees. Bailey has always used the doggie stairs. Since we have a set for every couch and bed, she has never even attempted to go on without the stairs.

Jumping off the couch isn't necessarily going to cause long term harm; and it does help build muscles and their accuracy in judging things. Repetitive "forced" jumping (like agility training) is more harmful to a growing pup. If they are jumping naturally, keep an eye on them but let them do what comes natural.

Lucky you. Sca thinks couchs and chairs are part of his track and should be leaped on when crossing the room :rolleyes2:
