Lucky you. Sca thinks couchs and chairs are part of his track and should be leaped on when crossing the room

Darby and Deja have races when they come running inside.. Typically, if Deja is chasing Darby, he leaps from the floor to the couch to the arm of the couch, overy the end table and to the floor again.. takes him 1.125 seconds.. Deja meanwhile runs around the couch and tries to catch him mid-flight when he leaps off the end.. It's an amazing display that doesn't neccesarily change if someone happens to be sitting on the couch, eating ice cream.. I love being his personal ramp!

Bailey is 8.5 months old and still does not know how to jump on and off the couches and beds. We have doggie stairs for our chihuahua, who has bad knees. Bailey has always used the doggie stairs. Since we have a set for every couch and bed, she has never even attempted to go on without the stairs.

Buffy is like Bailey. She loves doing short jumps, like over my legs (or, if I lie down, over my body), but she doesn't try to do giant jumps like the couch or the bed very often. I mean, it is a couple times her height! She has jumped up on the couch like twice, and both times we were surprised. Once in a while she jumps off the couch but usually she just sits there staring for a while and eventually she gives up and lies down or we help her down. I'm okay with her waiting for my cue before getting on and off the furniture anyway. (She is almost old enough to start agility and I want to try that next month!)

My friend brought her terrier over here and he can jump on and off both the bed and the couch, no problem. So I can imagine Darby's got the advantage there! Terriers are really good jumpers. Although personally I don't know if I like the dog jumping all over the furniture regularly... just personal preference. I would rather she depends on us for that.

My rule of thumb has always been, if they can get up, they can get down. Until they can get there themselves, I help but once they are able to, I stop.

I'm of the same opinion. But it's very Sheltie-dependent.
Layla: Jumps lightly as a ballerina up and down furniture.
Bits: Because of her once-bad hips (cured by Vibrant pets), she doesn't jump up or down, but does like to be lifted onto the bed in the morning. However, if she doesn't want to be brushed, she will climb into the lap of DH or DS to be protected!
Annie Laurie: Hops up on the sofas and hassock. Uses her private staircase her Daddy build for her to get up on the bed.
Beckon: Sigh. Even though he could practically step onto the sofa, he remains unwilling to jump onto or off of anything. Even though he's so big, he's still a baby and 8.5 months.

Yes, I struggle back and forth between, do I help her, do I let her whine and cry and finally after awhile she MIGHT jump??

I think Megan is at a very important age right now of 5 1/2 months of do or die with training. Honestly right now my biggest challenges with her are getting her to "recall", come to me when called, (when she doesn't want to) not jump at me while I am cooking and not bugging our old lady cats!. I am pretty sure all the above are adolescent behaviors, but I need to nip them in the bud while she is still pliable..

I wish Panda was more like that. The bed is at least 30" off the ground and Panda is a lot smaller than Bailey but she has no fear, she doesn't jump down like Bailey does she flies off.

Bailey and Panda chase each other around the house up on the bed, off the bed, up the stairs, down the stairs, up on the bed, off the bed, down the hall, into the living room, around the coffee table up the stairs, down the stairs and on and on it goes.

What an image, hahaha! Megan CAN jump off the couch and does sometimes and sometimes I rescue her . My 16 y/o daughter fusses at me, "Mom you're going to raise her to be scared of everything". I childishly stick my tongue out at her ..

That's Darby to a tee.. Deja and him run/jump/wrestle/fly all over the place. I'm always worried that he's going to end up hurt but darned if he isn't tough as nails..

, this really is an ongoing discussion Kaylee and I have. She thinks Megan should already know SOOO much and behave perfectly obedient by now. It's all my fault that she's not and since I haven't found an obedient school I like, that's my fault also. My daughter tends to forget she wasn't and isn't perfect either ..
