Merlin signed up for first comp - panic!

:That's so weird because I was only wondering this morning whether you had done any competitions with Merlin yet!:biggrin2:

How does Merlin fit into 2 height catagories? I thought they had to be measured first and I was wondering when I needed to have Epic measured as I will need to get him used to having a wicket put over him. I think if I tried it now he would come in as a daschund!

Those classes sound interesting. As a complete newbie I don't really know how it works. So much better when you can have several classes to enter. I like the sound of the Introductory class which sounds like a nice gentle start, unlike obedience where you are thrown in more or less at the deep end. What is a steeplechase? I have visions of Merlin going round Cheltnham!

Very exciting to have a show to look forward to, I presume it's going to be indoors if in January? Wishing you both the very best of luck and can't wait to hear how it goes.:biggrin2:

The BAA is not as strict on heights as Kennel Club and are much more about 'fun' and agility, though there are awards, trophies and various leagues you can participate in, of course. My friend tells me they are good place to start as the KC comps can be a bit over-competitive. These ones are much more about people coming together to enjoy agility with their dogs. They are held all over the country if you are interested.

Here's the link to their show schedule
http://www.baa.uk.net/shows.html

How it works with height, there are four classes micro, mini, medium and maximum. Dogs 16in or under (Merlin is dead on 16in) can enter mini, however dogs over 14in, but under 20in can choose to enter medium. So Merlin could go in either group. I measured out the height jumps and he would be fine with both classes. You can only enter one height group, however, though you can change later on.

The BAA is relatively new and run by agility enthusiasts, they only charge £2.50 per class/dog, so for three classes it is only costing me £7.50. The one thing they do ask is that if you participate you also help out for an hour, which I think is fair enough.

Steeplechase is an all jumps course, I have no idea how this differs from jumpers!

The venue is indoors in a riding school. I am getting excited now I don't know how I will be able to wait until 5 Jan!

Thank you for that info, I like the sound of the BAA concept and have just had a look at their website. It sounds much more relaxed for new competitors, I'm sure you'll have a great time and very glad to hear Merlin isn't going to be running round Cheltenham:wink2:

you will have so much fun.....I still remember my first trial (with Olive) and somehow, that was the best weekend I ever had.....Q'd 6 of 6 runs!! So you never know! :wink2:

I don't know, he might enjoy running cheltenham!

Mitchy, I won't hold my breath to do anything more than survive the course without making too many mistakes:lol:

Sounds like a really great venue for your first trial--that should take at least a little of the pressure off :)

Just remember, you have practiced loads and loads of times with Merlin--you know what he is capable of.

Can't wait to hear all about it!
