Purebreed dogs are always tattooed before they leave their homes. Its a standard with AKC/CKC
That's the first I have ever heard that AKC dogs are tatooed before they leave their homes. Maybe CKC it is but not AKC.Both my dogs are mircrochipped and tatooed.I like both.Shadow my oldest is microchipped twice one with AKC and one internationally when he traveled overseas to compete. It was mandatory. Both tatoos are their AKC numbers.
Sharon - tattoos are not mandatory with the Canadian Kennel Club. It is either tattoo or microchip. Mine are not tattooed but are microchipped and all are registered.
I believe microchipping. This is because MOST dog owners and others now know about microchipping being out there. I have never ever seen a tattooed dog and I wouldn't even know where to look for a tattoo! The plus side of tattoos though is they are visible versus needing a scanner to scan for it, but like I said, I have no idea where the tattoo would even be nor would I think to look for one.
Also, I do a dog collar with the dog's name on it and a telephone to call me, so if the dog does get lose, that person can call me and let me know, as long as the dog actually has it's collar on and didn't slip it.

That is very true... in my area, you can just pick a dog off the street and say it's yours. The end. No dog licenses nothing. Find a dog, it's yours. And that's what scares me.This question *completely* depends on what your end goal is.
Right now, there is nothing that defines "ownership" of a dog as it applies to state law. So no type of permanent identification will legally tie you to your dog. You just hope when the time comes, that you have enough stuff to show they really are yours and not someone else's.
