Micro chip or tatoo

I got the Barkcode Help me Home tags for the boys. Not everyone will take a lost dog to the vet to get scanned for a microchip. These tags will allow anyone with a cell phone to contact you instantly or whoever you have assigned as the primary contact. Fillion has his own webpage now :) You can list 5 contact numbers.
What I really wanted was GPS on him but that is still too expensive IMHO.

If we go out of town and leave the boys, it takes a few min to add the number of the dog sitter. Will probably get a chip as a backup in case he loses the collar.

Microchip or tatoo

Purebreed dogs are always tattooed before they leave their homes. Its a standard with AKC/CKC

That's the first I have ever heard that AKC dogs are tatooed before they leave their homes. Maybe CKC it is but not AKC.Both my dogs are mircrochipped and tatooed.I like both.Shadow my oldest is microchipped twice one with AKC and one internationally when he traveled overseas to compete. It was mandatory. Both tatoos are their AKC numbers.

Sharon - tattoos are not mandatory with the Canadian Kennel Club. It is either tattoo or microchip. Mine are not tattooed but are microchipped and all are registered.

We have a couple Canadian registered dogs and they are only mircochipped.

Neither Mircochips nor Tattoos are required by the AKC to either register or sell a puppy or dogs. We mircochip. I know alot of people who who do neither. I know no one that tattoos.

I work in a humane society and we return alot of dogs and cats because of mircochips. However, lot of them do not have updated info so are dead ends as well. I don't think in 3 yrs I have seen more than 1 dog with a tattoo come in.

Best way to get your pet back-Collar with tags and mircochip(permenant ID).

I believe microchipping. This is because MOST dog owners and others now know about microchipping being out there. I have never ever seen a tattooed dog and I wouldn't even know where to look for a tattoo! The plus side of tattoos though is they are visible versus needing a scanner to scan for it, but like I said, I have no idea where the tattoo would even be nor would I think to look for one.

Also, I do a dog collar with the dog's name on it and a telephone to call me, so if the dog does get lose, that person can call me and let me know, as long as the dog actually has it's collar on and didn't slip it.

Our Irish Setters were tattooed in the ears; but the two dogs have recovered I was on the way to the vets as soon as possible.... as both of those dogs were returned to the owners I told them how cheap chips were as neither had any way of finding owner.

This question *completely* depends on what your end goal is.

Right now, there is nothing that defines "ownership" of a dog as it applies to state law. So no type of permanent identification will legally tie you to your dog. You just hope when the time comes, that you have enough stuff to show they really are yours and not someone else's.

If you goal is to have a way to get your dog back if it gets away, then microchip is the way to go. They have faults, but the odds are better of finding a chip than finding a tattoo. But you have the problem of multiple chips, multiple registries, multiple frequencies, or a combination of all of those. If my dogs aren't wearing a collar, then nobody knows they are registered with AKC's Companion Animal Recovery. They aren't registered anywhere else.

Add to that that microchips migrate. I have one dog whose microchip is down behind his shoulder now. Lovely. A friend who is a retired veterinary pathologist will never microchip based on where she has found them (livers...) So pick your poison.

That is very true... in my area, you can just pick a dog off the street and say it's yours. The end. No dog licenses nothing. Find a dog, it's yours. And that's what scares me.
