Microchip ID card

Right, it's for paying members -- when I got Cubby's chip we got a free year. Shay and Melli I did a pay thing because their chips are 24 hour petwatch who doesn't participate in the scanner databases. I made sure their chip is linked to a good database (and they are also in the petwatch database as is Cubby). So this year, everyone has "paid" subscriptions. I will do a second card on Cubby when he is close to a year and more adult looking.

Say what now? Honey is registered with 24 hour pet watch-how is that different than the scanner databases. Now I'm worried!

Good grief, my dogs have been chipped with Home Again for years and I never knew this! Buried indeed...thanks so much for pointing it out, Cara! I also pay the yearly fee as a safeguard. That's been one of the legal contentions in the Piper case...that she was chipped but not "registered" with the company so it's not valid. For $17 a year, I'm not making that mistake.

Ordering those cards right now! THANK YOU!!

Maybe I misunderstood, but I thought the controversy over Piper not being registered was because her owner never got online and filled out the information/never sent in the paperwork. Because if you scan Missy's microchip, and look up her id, it brings up my information. And I don't pay the $17+ annual enrollment. When they scanned Piper's microchip, it only came up with the vet's information.

This is what the annual fee gives you-
24/7 on-call support with trained Lost Pet Specialists
A nationwide network of over 450,000 volunteer PetRescuers
A National Pet Recovery Database that assures their contact information remains current (This is also included for life regardless if you do the annual fee)
Travel Assistance that covers the cost of flying a lost dog or cat home, up to $500, when found more than 500 miles away
24/7 Emergency Medical Hotline that provides access to a licensed ASPCA veterinarian when pets are sick or injured while traveling or when your clinic is closed
2 Free ID cards (this isn't advertised on their website!)

Maybe it's worth it.. idk. I think I'm still mad at them because when they sent the email saying her enrollment was expiring, I was led to believe she wouldn't be listed in the database anymore.. I had to really dig to figure out that she would still be listed. $18 is what, one night out to dinner? I would give up one night out to dinner if it meant my dog got home to me faster.

My two deceased dogs are still listed in the DB. Just saying.

I paid Shay & Melli's fees to get them into the DB as they were 24 hour pet watch which doesn't participate in the scan database. Cubby was free with implantation for a year.

After this year, there really is no reason to keep paying. They will be in the DB for life. If I move I can call them. However, you want to have a good life-long picture entered to remain attached to the entry.

It's too bad, 24 Hour petwatch is a $39 life-long fee to edit and stuff, not annually PER dog.

All right I'm still confused, because the 24 hour petwatch website says that if they are lost and brought into a vets or pound to be scanned they'll come up with the 24 hour pet watch info and they'll get in touch with me 24/7 immediately, while the other place is still on the line...what does the other sites do differently?

IF the dog is scanned by a shelter or a vet, I understand there is sort of a master database they go to. They input the chip and it pulls up the info. However, 24 hour petwatch doesn't report to that master database. So then the shelter or vet would have to go over to the 24 hour petwatch site and try, just guessing maybe it is that kind of chip.

I had paid the $39 lifetime fee for Shay so I added Melli & Cubby to the petwatch DB in my profile.

I have my profile in Home Again back from my boys Quay & Mayson and now Cubby was added to that profile. I added Melli & Shay to that DB. NOW, if you input their chips in the master DB I hear they use, then all three come up to my profile through Home Again rather than 24 Hour Petwatch. It was a better option than getting a second chip. Wasn't that impressed with 24 Hour Petwatch as a company but the shelter did their chip through them. Must get them for free or something.

There isn't a "master database". The AAHA website (link below) says the following-

"AAHA provides an internet-based application that enables veterinarians, humane organizations, pet owners or other persons to search various Pet Recovery Service registries and identify those registries on which a particular microchip is registered. AAHA is not affiliated or involved with any specific microchip registry and has no relationship, financial or otherwise, with this Participating Pet Recovery Service Registry (“Registry”). This Registry has given AAHA permission to search the Registry’s database in order to assist pet owners in being reunited with their pets. AAHA does not maintain a database of microchips of its own. It only links to registries such as this one. The AAHA Universal Microchip Lookup Tool only searches the databases of companies that elect to participate in the program."

Participants are the following-
AKC Reunite
EIDAP
Found Animals
HomeAgain
HomewardBound
InfoPet
Microchip I.D. Solutions
Microchip ID Systems, Inc.
PetKey
PetLink
Save This Life
SmartTag Microchip
911PetChip

OK -- the correct term is "Master Internet-based Application" or "Master Internet Lookup Tool" rather than master database. I meant the site Ann referred us all to some time ago which is the one that you posted as a link. Notice 24-Hour Petwatch is NOT listed there. I got all three listed with one that IS listed there for safety sake, that would be Home Again since Cubby's chip is with them.

Not master "database" -- master "lookup site" to correct my terminology. However, 2 of my 3 would not turn up at this "lookup site" so now they do through my Home Again profile.
