I managed to get Monty eating kibble finally and he has been on a brand suggested by the vet. However I just found that this brand had a big recall lately for the cat variant killing more than a hundred cats. Obviously if it can do that to cats I'm not putting faith in their quality control so that's a no for Monty and I want to change.

I've been to the pet store and bought what I think looks ok and they suggested as it's the best they do. I've checked reviews online and they were really good

The food I've just got is Lillys Kitchen, I've posted the ingrediants below and I've given Monty a sample and he actually LOVES it. Before I gradually put him on it properly I just thought I'd ask if you think this will be OK for Monty and I want to make sure it doesn't contain something that's not good for Shelties that I've missed.

Darren, I don't know if you were on the forums during the big discussion on Dilated Cardiomyopathy (DCM). My vet actually talked to me about what food I was feeding, and recommended I switch to one of a few brands she recommended. It is still being investigated, but it appears that the inclusion of peas,lentils and pea protein is correlated with an increase in DCM even in young dogs, and some have died. I did a bunch of research on my own, and it's quite confusing, but I chose to go with Purina Pro Plan which was one of my vet's recommendations. I used to feed Wellness.

If you want more info, search for the thread, I think it's under the Commercial foods category. The basic take-away was NOT to feed a "grain-free" diet, because those were the ones who supplemented with peas etc. Since that's high on the ingredient list of the food you showed the label for I would try something else. Pet food stores are not always that knowledgeable about nutritional science.

The one I feed is Pro Plan Lamb and Oatmeal, it has limited ingredients. The dogs do great on it, and good firm stools also.

Hopefully you can find something good that he likes just as well.
 
Dog food is such an emotionally charged personal subject!!! :)

I do not feed my dogs kibble with peas... it is a uber cheap way of having acceptable levels of protein in a feed without actually using something you and I would consider a protein source.

Purina Pro Plan is one option. I feed my boys Fromm Adult Gold. I would hope others are available. Smart pupper parent to be reading labels!!!!
 
Wow thank you so much Sharon and Sandy. I can't believe I missed all that, I'll read through the posts tonight and tomorrow! Thanks for the suggestions as well, I'll have a look and see what we have and try to get some for Monty to try. Until they are able to finish investgating the apparent links I think it's best for me to just err on the side of caution!

Darren, this looks basically like an excellent food. Unfortunately, it's nearly impossible to find one that doesn't include pea products. There has been lots of reserarch done into the DCM cause and although they suspect pea products may be part of it, there is no conclusive evidence and in the cases where it's implicated, the pea products make up a larger portion of the kibble than this one.

What I like about your new food is that they actually give you the amount of each ingredient...that is unheard of here in the states! It's a guessing game. This list tells us that the pea portion of this food is basically miniscule, and most of it is very high quality ingredients. If Monty likes it, I'd stick with it.

When you do look at foods, steer clear of ANY food with byproducts, wheat, corn, soy and gluten derivatives. Those are fillers you'll find in many lower quality foods that are the equivalent of doggie junk food. Also, you need to feed MUCH more of the lower quality foods to get any measure of nutrition, usually at least twice as much. My 20 pound dogs who eat quality kibble get 1/4 cup per feeding.

If Monty likes this food and your vet recommends it and most importantly it agrees with him, stick with it. :yes:
 
Honest Kitchen makes a kibble "Chicken and Oat" and "Beef and Oat" doesn't have peas. My vet looked it over and approved. River loves it. It's human grade. Also not high protein as that should be avoided in shelties I forget the reason. Good luck, I always look for better options. It's also good to rotate diets and not feed the same thing for long periods of time, gradually introducing it of course. I've fed Fromm, Merrick, and will probably try the pro plan at some point since everyone here seems so happy with it. Good luck.
 
Forgot to add, I just read an article that stated aflatoxin which is deadly to dogs, can often be found in corn.... I do stay away from corn and corn gluten in dog food. SIGH. There's a lot to think about and sometimes it makes you crazy.

I noticed the lentils and peas right away too. Very cheap ingredient.
