Murphy is coughing

Poor Murphy. He had a cough when we adopted him from NCSR in January 2011, took him to our vet right away and was put on meds for bronchitis. He got better, but then started coughing intermittently. He's been back to our vet several times for this mysterious issue, had two sets of x-rays one year apart, and finally on Saturday our vet said it's time for him to see an internal medicine specialist. I grabbed an appointment with him for June 5.

I hope and pray it's something manageable since nothing obvious popped up on his x-rays. He's a precious part of our pawsome foursome and although we don't know exactly how old he is we hope to have him around for quite some time to come.

Murphy is in my thoughts and pryers. I've heard of cats being born with week lungs and are always coughing, but don't have any other health issues. Maybe thats what your baby has? I pray that he will get better soon.:fl:hugs

I have 2 that cough. One is 10 and the other is 13. The 10 yr old (Max) was heartworm positive when we got him. That was also the time when there was no treatment medication available. He finally got his heartworm treatments and is now clear. But he was left with a residual cough. Vet said it might go away but it hasn't.

The 13 yr old (Casey) coughs in exactly the same manner (you can't tell who it is without looking at them) as Max. BUT to the best of my knowledge Casey has never had heartworms. Both are rescues so no guarantees but we don't think he ever has had them.

Vet says he thinks it's collapsed trachea syndrome (I hope I got that right). When they cough, it opens the trachea back up again.

I give them Torbutrol (also known as the Magic Medicine or Gold because it's about $40/oz). It's very expensive but it works WONDERS! I can give it to them one time and it seems to last about 48 hrs with NO coughing.

Good thoughts coming to you. I have a cougher in my house also, but it is Bridey and she is a terrier mix. We went to ER last night, no resolutions but followup tomorrow with our own vet.

Wanted to put that out there for you because my husband and I are experiencing coughs this season in NJ. There was one year when it was so bad with two days and nights of coughing. Could all this be allergies???

Please everyone, I know this is the sheltie club and my sheltie is not coughing but I wanted to help if I could.

Hugs,
Kate
