My bestest little friend Jake... gone

So truly sorry to hear that the cancer advanced that swiftly. Went through this last year with Brooke and I feel your pain. Jake had an amazing life with you knowing he was cherished right up to the end. We do all that we can for them but when they are called home it is horrendous. I hope your lovely memories will be able to comfort you a bit. Take care.

Thanks for all of your kind words. Still very sad but getting back to work and life... it seems so hollow, like the meaningful parts have been carved out and only an empty shell remains -- it looks much the same at a glance, but something very important is now missing. Time tries to heal all wounds, but what of the scars it leaves, still painful to touch? Does it ever truly heal anything? Or does time just stop the bleeding, cover it up so no one else has to see what's been opened up and ripped away inside? Does the pain subside or do we just acclimate? The new normal is now more painful than before. A part of me is gone, yet still I have to carry on.

I posted a new album, some of my favorite memories of my friend Jake the Doggy. https://sheltieforums.com/media/albums/jake-the-doggy.638/

What a hoot... LOVE to hear the reaction to cows! My Beau makes the same sound if there is a squirrel he needs to banish from the yard!
The howl at sirens is so funny to hear from a sheltie! Thanks for sharing your videos! So fun to watch. Take care ...

You might consider creating a memorial on the Sheltie Nation Angels page too...

Isn't it the funniest sound? Like he couldn't decide whether to bark or whine. :-) He didn't like deer much either, he barked at them.

The howling was my favorite. One time I thought he'd gotten out and was lost, I walked the neighborhood, then I drove it, then I drove the nearby highway expecting the worst. I went back home in tears, trying to pick a picture for the lost doggy notices, when a fire truck went by, and I heard him howling! He was in the spare bedroom, under the bed! I checked that room 3 or 4 times, calling him of course, he didn't make a sound. Never looked under the bed, I couldn't believe he'd fit, he was 21", how much clearance under a standard bed frame, maybe 8"? It was just an air mattress on a box spring, he must've lifted it with his back. The netting underneath of the box spring was all torn away so he could stand crouched underneath...

I couldn't stop shaking for an hour!

I will do something on the angels page pretty soon, thanks.

Writing about my memories of him is very therapeutic!

It IS hard. I still sometimes get surprised by waves of grief for my angel girls. I dearly loved and was bonded to all of them, but my Brooke was such a special girl and losing her just gutted me. I think in my case it is sometimes just under the surface. But you will find the happy and good time memories will prevail eventually and that's how they would want to be remembered!

Lymphoma didn't waste any time, oncologist said it had gone too far -- how did I not know he was that sick for so long? I noticed him getting a little weaker over the last few weeks, he didn't want to jump onto our bed, then all of a sudden like a switch was flipped, he could hardly walk. He had mud all over his paws and in his mouth -- I thought he'd stepped in something bad and ingested trying to clean his paws.

But the ER vet said his blood sugar crashed and his platelet count was zero. They got his sugar back up, and I took him home to spend one last night by my side.

This is what I had engraved on his urn:

RIP Jake the Doggy
You’re gone but will always be in my heart
I will forever treasure the time we shared
A finer friend I could not have asked for

I miss him sooooo much... there aren't even words.
I'm so sorry! Dogs are good at hiding their illness, don't be hard on yourself, or try not to be
