My first Sheltie (pic) compared to Barley (new pic)

I was just thinking lately about how different Barley is compared to my first Sheltie.

She was a true 'Diva' in every sense of the word. I don't think she was ever silly, even as a puppy. She housetrained in a week and never destroyed anything. She was friendly but snobby with strangers and other dogs. Not aggressive in any way, just not interested. She liked our family and a few other select people and that was that. Dogs were looked down upon like she wasn't part of their species.

She had no use for toys of any sort and I spent a ton of money on them until finally giving up. She also would never go through puddles of any kind - it was simply beneath her to get her paws wet and dirty. She would just sit down on the sidewalk and wait for you to pick her up and carry her over.

She was pretty lazy for a Sheltie and would be satisfied with a daily walk around the block.

We attended a few obedience trials and she was decent, but not super enthusiastic. She would recall but it was always a slow walk over, like "Fine, I'm coming but it better be worth it..."

She was extremely food motivated and loved all food in that way that only Shelties can.

She loved being groomed, was stubborn as hell and always knew she was being admired for her good looks.

We loved her to pieces and it was a very sad day to say goodbye to her when she passed at 13.5.

This was our lovely lady:

And THEN there's Barley. He's funny, goofy, super silly and prances instead of walks. He loves to run, is very toy motivated - more so than food, and has destroyed most of his toys from 'loving' them too much.

If there is a puddle in the vicinity Barley knows it and RACES towards it. He loves mud, sand, and getting nice and dirty.

He loves anyone he meets, be it human or dog, and greets them with so much enthusiasm he looks like a bouncing ball.

He isn't bad at obedience but still too silly to control himself for long. His recall is a bouncy jumpy happy run across the room, his big furry bum wagging all the way. He eats his food and likes it but isn't huge on treats - he'd much rather be socializing than eating treats.

Here's my pretty boy at almost 7 months:

So funny how different their personalities can be, even though they look alike.

You never know exactly what you'll get when you adopt a new puppy and I guess that's the fun of it. :biggrin2:

I love the pictures!

You are absolutely correct. They do have their own personalities. When we got Shelby she was the complete opposite of Hollie. Hollie was a perfect little angel and never really did anything wrong, and was easy to house train. Shelby on the other hand was a difficult puppy, she has a mind of her own. As DH always says "she a little smart a$$".

But we wouldn't have it any other way. I could not imagine my life without them.

oh wow

many of the traits your lil lass had was exactly how my 1st was. She thought other dogs were beneath her, she was highly snobby like that. She was the easiest dog ever to train. Housebreaking was a breeze, she learned stuff like she spoke english, you could tell her something and somehow she knew what was expected. She hated puddles too, she didn't like wet paws. She loved the camera and posed.

Your girl was lovely!!!

But Barley is a good looking lad as well. And it is funny how different their personalities can be...and he is just all boy, ha...

WOW - Stunning shelties!!!

I really never understood the differences they can have until I had several!

When I lost my first shetlie a female... she was exactly like yours...
I was so devastated when I lost her the breeder explained she was a unique female as some can be a bit aloof.

She suggested getting a male next for their goofiness and fun loving personalities! Boy, was she right.

Just LOVE those images!

You lass was so pretty...and now you have a handsome little lad. :smile2:

Even though there are some traits that are fairly common in this breed (or any breed), there are also wonderful differences. No matter how many Shelties you have throughout life, no two will ever be the same...each is unique and special in his/her own way.

It's funny, Piper is similar in some things he does but totally different to Barley. Piper loves to run through puddles (he just loves to run I think) but he's suspicious of strangers and other dogs. He loves pretty much any treat but just tolerates his own dog food and has so many toys but would much rather just chew on a piece of wood lol( and no, I don't give it to him he just chews on things like the baby gate, clothes pins etc haha) but he is so sweet and loveable (he's my first male) and like Barley he's all boy hahaha. Mostly it's play play play....run run run, I tell people that he's nice and calm.....when he's asleep.

Wow, they're both gorgeous! The female looks like she's waiting for someone to come admire her :wink2: and Barley looks like he's going to charge the photographer to come PLAY. So similar in looks and so different in personalities.

Love the pictures. They're both so beautiful. You're so right about the personality differences. Each one, a snowflake. No two exactly the same.
My girl is one of the "don't even think about touching me" Shelties. She's crazy and high energy. She'd run non-stop all day if she could and she's a world-class barker. Her littermate, a male, is totally laid-back, never barks and is far more accepting of strangers. I don't own the male, I just happened to randomly run into the owners at an event and we figured out that they were litter-mates when we compared Birthdates and parents.
