My Little Graduate!

Thanks a lot everyone!!
We weren't going to go to level 2, because we're kind of in a rut right now with our finances(darn economy :rolleyes2:)...but the instructor has layed out an offer for me that I just CAN'T refuse...she said she wants him there, so she's giving me more then just a simple generous discount. She's like "I want him there!!!!" She loves him...she was so impressed by him that she's getting a pup from my breeder. Well...her PARENTS are getting one...but she'll be doing the training and such...she's just as excited if not MORE excited then her parents are! LOL

As for the mat-stay...yes, it's when you tell them to go to their mat, bed, crate...towel...whatever you choose...and no matter where the "mat" is, he's to go to it.

Some luck came my way, and we are now doing level 2!! Yes!!! March 24th!! I'm so happy!!!

Ok, did I miss something here? You aren't going to go to level 2? What is March 24th? Something good eh? :biggrin2:

Lol, yes....I'm the QUEEN of typos....what I MEANT to say is that we are "NOW" - with a "W" doing level 2!! LOL Thanks for catching that one. I will have to edit that one!

Congrats on the graduation. How did you get Caliber to be able to go to his mat when you said it? Also, out of curiosity, is this a store training class or a smaller class training thing?

Moreover, congrats to you on working so hard with Caliber, behind every good dog is a good dog owner.

Thanks! And as for the "mat stay"...I'll put it in point form and number the steps. As for the training, it's a smaller business that I go to. The Pet Stores, and more well known places around in my area all all prong collars and choke chains. I hated that, so I went with this one.

1. Place your dog on or in his mat/chair/crate/bed.
2. Once on or in start treating(try to get 10 small treats in one right after the next)
3. Walk away, and have your dog wait until you release them. DO NO treat once off the mat.
4. Repeat over and over.
5. Once you've done that for one day, start to put one treat on the mat while holding your dog about 3 feet away. Make sure he/she sees you put it there, and hold him/her by the collar and let them run to the mat. DO NOT put your verbal command to this yet. Once on the mat - PRAISE PRAISE PRAISE!(about 5 treats) Again, don't let him/her off the mat until you say they can.
6. When your dog is successfully going to the mat with no problems, THEN put your verbal to it. But say the command, pause, THEN release your dog, and just continue to do this over and over.
7. Once you do that...remove the treat from the mat and just start telling them to go. Once they are on the mat they get treats treats treats! Still usually about 5, one right after another.
8. Just keep moving farther back, and start proofing it in different rooms of the house.

Once you get this down you can use it in any situation. If you have company and want to avoid them jumping up, ask them to go to their mat. If you're having dinner and don't like them begging, ask them to go to their mat. Stuff like that. I use it everyday...altho I have not used it officially yet. We don't have much company, but I still call it out to him about 5 times a day just so he doesn't lose it. It's very easy...it looks much more then it lets on to be. Caliber is pretty good at going when he's asked(except for the final test of course :rolleyes2::lol:) But I can do so much as go outside with his bed, and tell him to go and he would......providing the rate of interest that is outside at that given moment! We're still working on proofing it in places other then home, but if we're in our house he has no problems with it.

Congrats, that is great! This board is so busy, and if I missed anyone lately congrats to all of you also.

That is really great, you go Calliber, and I will be waiting for more great news from you.

That's great TaraLynn!! Congratulations to both you and Caliber! Hope I'll be able to do some obedience and maybe agility with my new puppy.

You'll love obedience! It's so fun! And once they start to learn you feel so great about it!
