We are thinking of your family and praying for Honey. I am glad to know that she has such a loving family around her in her hour of need. She knows it too.

I am so sorry for you - its a tough decision you have to make. Dogs do really well with rear leg amputations. When they run they tend to keep both back feet together so its actually easy for them to run, a slow walk is a little harder. But if it is only going to give a short time, it may be too long for her to rehabilitate. I can't imagine how hard this must be.

You are faced with the toughest choice of all time. Honey is living in a very loving home and knows you are concerned about her. This Fantastic breed , The Sheltie is such a loving and family oriented furkid. May Our Good Lord guide you and St. Francis watch over you, your family and Honey. Whatever your decision, please stay with Honey when her time to cross the Bridge comes. It will make her more comfortable and easier on her. God Bless and comfort you during this heart wrenching time.:cry:
 
I am so sorry to hear that your dear sheltie has osteosarcoma :( A friend lost her flat coated retriever to it not long ago, after amputation that bought her dog another 5 months to live. For what its worth her dog had no trouble bouncing back from the surgery and she felt that she ultimately made the right decision in having the surgery.

I'm so sorry that you are going through this. I don't have any experience in this situation, but I'm sure you will make the right decision for your Honey. She is in my prayers.
 
I am so sorry to hear this. From your description, it sounds as though the leg is very frail. However, I'm a little confused about the situation. Have they determined whether the cancer has metastacized ? I wouldn't expect amputation to be suggested if it had... but then if they are suggesting amputation, why is the time line they are mentioning so short ?

(I have a friend who eventually lost her Aussie to osteosarcoma, which was diagnosed at age 2 in his cervical spine. He had surgery and received radiation treatments which proved very successful and prolonged his life another 8 years. However, the cancer came back in the same place at age 10 and was much more aggressive. He was put on tramadol and received some chemo and treatments of pamidronate to help rebuild bone. Initially they saw some improvement in his limping, but three months later they determined that things were just too painful for the dog to continue.)

I am so sorry to hear about Honey. Our family found out 2 weeks ago that our 7 year old sheltie has colon cancer. We were initially told it was something else beside cancer. We were also faced with a tough decision (there is a thread all about it). I know how hard it is...and what you are going through. I hate we were both given bad news about our shelties. Just keep praying...God heals :yes:
 
After much soul searching and listening to our hearts, it is with heavy hearts that we have decided we will put Honey's needs ahead of our own.

We've agonized and gone over the pros and cons over the past week, but we are now certain our decision is the right one. We will not put Honey through the pain of this dreaded disease longer than necessary.

For the past 11 years, my fur baby has been my companion, my confidante and my best friend. She has always been by my side, kept me happy, and comforted me when I was sad. I can do no less for her and will be by her side and comfort her until the very end.

Thank you all for your thoughts and prayers. They have been very comforting to my wife and I in our time of need. Please pray for our Honey as the dreadful day approaches.

We hope all of you and your fur babies keep each other well and safe.
