My sheltie lost all the hair on his ears from gluing. WHY?

Detachol

Hi mbfrench, yes Walmart told me that, as well as several other pharmacies here (Corning, NY). I was put on hold 5 times with Walmart as they kept checking with different people. But, that's Walmart for you...around here anyways. Nobody seems to know anything there. BUT, I saved like 75% by ordering it online. I don't know if i can post any pictures of his ears on here since I'm not a premium member. I'll have to look into it. But the only spots he's really missing hair is on the tops of the ears...the part of the ear that doesn't get any glue on it...about 1-2" up from the tip of the ear. His ears stay tipped when they're down but when he looks up at me, they don't keep the tipped shape until he tilts his chin back down. We'll get there haha. They're glued right now as he does have just enough hair for it. He needs the brace on the top because they are a little too far to the side. My profile picture shows how his ears were last month...they're nice and floppy now. I'll try to get a couple pics.

You can sign up for free on Photobucket, Facebooke or Flickr and post your pictures from there..

Though I DO recommend anyone to become a premium member....its only $25 and it really does help keep the forum going. My "plug of the day"! :smile2:

Here is a pic of the missing fur... it's all on the top part of the ear that the glue never even touched. The bare skin is a bit dry and scaly, the vet recommended aquaphor for the dryness. I'm just hoping the fur grows back. I think I'm going to have to take him to the vet if it doesn't soon. He doesn't itch them or shake his head at all, so I don't think they're bothering him. They just look so mangy! Claussen8.jpg

I agree....you should not have hair loss on TOP of the ears from gluing.

Is it possible that when you removed the glue with the remover that you got some on top of his ears?

If its not bothering him, I wouldn't worry too much. It should grow back eventually, though it will take time. But if he starts to scratch at it or it becomes red and inflamed, then definitely to the vet.

I took him to the vet on Tuesday. She said they don't look too bad-a bit flaky but not inflamed-and there were no parasites in her scraping. Magically though, his ears are looking much better right after the visit haha. I'm putting Eucerin's "Aquaphor" on them now. I'm sure it's because I got some goo gone on there. Detachol is my new best friend for doing Little Bear's ears. Claussen's I think don't even need anything anymore (thank God).
