My very old Maggie

Our Maggie will be 17 in December and these last few months have been trying, actually almost since vacation in April we have seen a decline. A bit more hearing loss, some days just won't eat or will eat one meal and not the next. Sometimes she loves some thing at one meal and not the next so it's a matter of having several things on hand that I know she likes. Zak's breeder suggested dogsure and baby rice cereal which have both been a godsend.
She sleeps most all day, some days she is restless and goes in circles then finally lays down.
She is just a bag of bones and has lost all her muscle mass, but still manages to get up and down and sometimes needs a pick up. We do have her walk around the yard to get some sunshine. Zak is really good with her and realizes she can't play anymore. He checks on her often.
It is a blessing to have her but some days it is a challange.

I'm very sorry to hear of Maggie's health issues. At age 17, that tells me that you have been an excellent fur-mommy and Maggie has had as good as it gets. I will keep both you and Maggie in my thoughts and prayers that whatever time your sweet baby has left with you will be soft, gentle and easy for you both. Please let us know how Maggie, and you are coping.

It sounds like Maggie has had a wonderful life and lovely senior years. Zak is such a good boy to help take care of her. I wish you many more days of cuddles with her and naps in the sun for Maggie. :hugs

Prayers for your Maggie

I know how hard this is for you seeing your beloved Maggie in decline.
My friend recently had the same issues with her Dalmatian.
It never gets any easier when the love of you life is so frail and refuses to eat. Many prayers being sent your way for your dear sweet Maggie. May the days you have remaining be filled with your love for each other and comfort knowing you are a great mom... many of us never see 17 years for our shelties... you are truly bless. Kindest regards, Gloria, Laddie, Chance, and Logan.

There is a beauty to the Sheltie winter that not everyone is blessed to see. Maggie, with all her challenges, is so fortunate to have you there to appreciate her vintage years.

How lucky Maggie is to be part of your family. The love and tender care you give her in her senior years is something all dog parents should learn from. I know she returns the love many times to all of you. Cosey and I wish you peaceful days and warm sunshine ahead. Ellen (Cosey'smom)

Maggie is magnificant to live 17 years, and more days to come.

When Lucky had his check up, I worried about him, because he runs his butt off and then gets so darn tired. The vet gave him an ol' age stimulous pill and by golly it works too. He is 12, but to go this long at 17 Maggie is doing good, and may she have better days ahead.

Hopefully she starts eating. I think Lucky has a bit of a hearing problem too, but it could be, OH what does she want now.

Maggie has a wonderful family!!! :smile2:

Just a couple of months ago, we let our 17 plus year old Princess go. At this age you will mentally prepare yourself when to let them go, if the quality of life is not there, then it will be time to let them have peace. I know it is hard to make the decesion, but you must know that to make 17 plus years, that you have given her the best life possible, there are many Sheltie lovers who would give anything to have their fur kid live that long. I feel blessed that my Princess live such a good life. They will tell you when it is time.
