Have a good friend that has a 15 year old sheltie that all of sudden will not sleep in her crate at night, actually she is just not sleeping. What would help her sleep Melotonin maybe?

I did suggest an x-pen like we used with Maggie, with her demintia.

Any type of sudden change warrants a trip to the vet, especially at 15.

I would be worried that this signaled some level of discomfort...and would definite recommend a vet check with full bloodwork, etc.

I reread her post and it is not a sudden thing, she just does not want to sleep in her crate anymore and barks all night. So she is tryinig other things with her and will talk to the vet again today for some demintia meds.

My boy had an episode of not sleeping at night. Looking back, it may have been an early sign of discomfort from two fatal diseases that he ended up having.

I very vaguely recall reading that elderly dogs can sometimes get some kind of nighttime separation anxiety. If mom/dad doesn't do so already, at bedtime, put the crate at the head of mom/dad's bed, with the door facing the bed. That way, the Sheltie will know that mom/dad are right beside him/her. For his whole life, that was the sleeping arrangement with me and my boy.
