PS, my dogs carry their tails wrapped to the right which I believe is a sign of friendly all is well. I'll try to find the source and post it, probably some article I read in Whole Dog Journal or lol...fakebook...
Need opinion...anxiety or excitement?

Honestly I've tried that...the faster I go, the faster he wants to go and seems to amp him up even more. It becomes a race.

Interesting...I've never felt that the tail wrapping was anxiety because it's just something he's done all the time with me. But the barking...this trial was the worst, we actually NQ'd. He touched a few signs and barked from beginning to end. Didn't care much for this judge as she judged Rally like it was obedience...if dog was even off on his sit by an inch it got you marked for a poor sit (American judge who isn't familiar with our rules).

I think much of his problem is a lack of confidence. As much as my trainer knows about teaching competitive obedience she knows nothing about issues with a dog or Shelties in particular.
I gotta say she pushed me over the edge on Monday...the judge (AKC judge) didn't hand out scores after Advanced run, she waited for the Intermediate to go on first. It was the last day, almost 3 pm and we all wanted to go home. I asked my trainer could you get my sheet for me? She said no...if I have to wait, you have to wait. Wow, I was not impressed. We've had a few issues over the past year, with her getting mad at me because of a miscommunication between us, I took the high road and apologized. Then in August at a show she told me I was rude (someone was looking for a washroom and asked and I answered)..I was not happy about that but again I let it go. Now this show she ignored me, (she's buddy buddy with another student) didn't watch our runs or offer encouragement and didn't even congratulate me on getting our OTCH. I really think I have to end this.
I'm taking Finnie to the new training facility on Monday but I'm not sure how to end it with my current trainer. I don't know if I should just say I'm taking a break or should I tell her I'm going elsewhere. I intend to work Piper at this facility too...he just needs the practice.

do the new people know anything about shelties? Just because GSDs are also herding dogs does not mean that the same techniques work well for both breeds. When I started rally, the first instructor was a BC person- again another herding breed but not the same as a sheltie. when Callie needed more work/help, we found a sheltie person to work with- she really understood how to work with a sheltie.
might be a good tactic for the breakup

I guess I'm better at breaking up than I thought lol. I'd messaged her this morning to let her know I'd be taking Finnie to a different class for the distractions, that I'd probably just come every 2 weeks with Piper and her response was telling me what a horrible person I was, she said death is so much simpler when you have so called friends chitting on your leg.do the new people know anything about shelties? Well I was done. I said some not so nice but true things (she actually stole some Rally sign holders from another trainer, same one who's class we'll be attending) among them that she has no moral compass and well.....we were done. She blocked me on Facebook and unfriended me
but hey, I'm good...happy actually, this has been a long time coming.We'll start renting Mat time at same facility where I'm going to take Finnie so I'll go at 8:30 Monday's and work them for an hour and then have class with Finnie. It'll work out so much better and I won't have to deal with her narcissistic b.s.

Drama, oh how I cannot stand drama! You are SO much better off without someone in your life who responds like that! What ever happened to "Good luck! I hope the new training center works out and that we can still work together on occasion."

Thanks Sandy...this lady was nothing but drama. Finnie will do much better, he's SUCH a good boy and he try's so so hard to work for me in the ring. I can tell something about that- there is no comparison at all.
After 3 GSD, I thought I had a lot of experience with herding dogs.
Then I got Minnie
After a week I could see that I could forget all about my "shepherd dog" experience.
Sheltie's mind is completely different
- I could absolutely not work with her in the same way
Lisa - Now it becomes difficult with my English - but it's all written with love
When I watch the video I see a young unconsecrated (not insecure) dog,
he is not at all confident in the exercises, he tries his best to do what you want.
Lisa he is so young and you know yourself
he needs more confidence - it's the downside with two dogs.
Personally - I probably had not gone to the competition yet,
but trained more on few exercises, so he had many success experiences
Until he has built up more confidence.
Finnie is under a lot of pressure, when a stranger stands so close
and staring at you
At the same time, he has no overview of what's going to happen
Poor Finnie !
Now you have got such a fantastic result with Piper
So now it's Finnie's turn - that you really work with his confidence
and not least let him have lots of success
-you can't expect him to be "a Piper"
