New AKC Rules Start Today Sept.1st

Edited.

I looked up the new rule. It states

Performance: The dog shall pause on the table for five cumulative seconds. The judge’s count shall start once all four (4) paws have touched the table (and the dog remains on the table top). Neither a sit or a down position shall be required.

Which I'm taking as, it doesn't matter what the dog is doing, as long as his four paws are on the table (moving, not moving, sitting, down, no matter.)

What?!?! Are you serious!? This isn't good. Not good at all! Koji has an auto down. So instead of asking them to do sit or down, we are now telling them to NOT do a down?

I'm not sure if the rule is "The dog must stand" or just "The dog just has to be on the table".

We do auto-downs, too.

And I agree that it's dumbing down the obstacle. The biggest problems I see that people have with the table is that the dog stands there, refusing to lay down (or sit, as the case may be). Rarely is it the case that the dog won't stay on the table.

The new table rule is certainly "dumbing down" that obstacle. How hard is it to teach in the grand scheme of agility? Not really.

I really was quite surprised when I heard they were getting rid of the down on the table. My first reaction was that was going to make it too easy for those who struggle to get their dogs into a sit or down on the table. Like you said, it is really that hard to teach? No.

Just because I don't train an instant down on a table doesn't mean I agree with starting to count when 4 paws touch; it just doesn't bother me because of my experience with other venues. My dog can still do a sit or down on the table successfully but only when I ask him for the behavior.

My understanding of the rule is that the count starts as soon as the dog's paws hit the table.

Its not a Stand-Stay requirement just a rule change that no action, sit or down, is required on the table; only that the 4 paws are on the table for the duration of the count.

Koji doing an auto-down should not be an issue.

New Rules

Also the 8 inch and 24 inch dog will get more time to run the course.I still like AKC the best even though it is boring and there is alot of down time. I am anxious to try the new game Time To Beat.My next favorite venue would be USDAA then NADAC.

Boring? Never. ;) I need to try USDAA to be able to compare them all (minus TDAA - Koji at 18" is too tall, lol).

BTW, what is Time To Beat?

Time To Beat is a course made up of standard and JWW. If you got to the AKC website and do a search on it it will tell you about it.It seems interesting. You didn't think AKC was boring? USDAA Shadow has done quite well in qualifying for their Nationals and has won a bunch of 1st's with them. I have a medal where he won the Grand Pree and . He has a few NADAC titles. If I did not do AKC then it would be USDAA.Teapcup Agility to me is meant for toy breeds.

Taking away a mandatory down on the wait table is nice because it gives concessions to other venues. I don't really have any personal feelings on it, having never competed.

I do like the lowering of the tire because the dog tends to jump higher on jumps with narrow widths. I think it is supposed to be safer?

It seems a little dangerous to take away the upside zone on the DW contact.

Depends on your definition of 'toy.' At 11.5 lbs and barely 13 inches, Duncan is my agili-toy. Ha Ha Ha... *rolls eyes* Can't help the corniness.

The new rule just means you can now do anything you please on the table... stand, sit, or down. They'll start counting as soon as the dog hits the table. What you do with those five seconds are up to you, so long as your dog stays on the table
