New Behavior is Troublsome

I can't remember how long Hollywood has been with you, but if he's gone more than a day, two at most, without a poop and he's eating, there is a problem. Whether it's internal, or a blockage, or something else, it needs to be sorted out and I'd give a call to your vet asap.

As a semi-show person, I have to say that no breeder I know keeps show dogs in the manner you describe. Dogs trained for the ring have to be happy in their work, willing to let judges and others put their hands all over them and open their mouths, be comfortable in noisy, busy situations with lots of people and other dogs, and willing to eat anywhere at any time and be comfortable in a crate.

I agree with others here who question what the woman you bought him from is telling you. Shelties can be timid, but this is way beyond that.
 
I hate to say this, but does anyone think we should try to get our money back and give him back to her? I don't want to take that route, but I don't want him to be unhappy with us and she said he enjoyed being with all of the other dogs there, maybe he should stay with them? Just want whats best for Hollywood :cry: When I emailed earlier I explained everything and she said give it some time and then we can talk??

I am a huge fan of rescuing and I plan to get one through rescue in the near future anyway.

1- The home situation he was brought up in from birth,may very well be playing a huge role in his behaviour.
you said males & females were seperate,and not much interaction took place.
But even with that said,Hollywood does not display normal puppy behaviour.

2- I do think getting some sort of liquids & bland diet,maybe entice him with something yummy to get him started.
Baby food,chicken,rice,gaterade,pedialyte.He won't have a bowel movement if he has not consumed any food. If he does not eat..I say he is sick.No puppy will eat,or grown dog for that matter will eat if thier bellys are upset.

I have done my fair share of fostering over the last 6 years of many young pups,and even at times had to resort to syringe feeding,and IV fluids injected under skin to keep them hydrated.
ANY food at this point is better than NO food or liquids. If he is more comfy being fed on the sofa,then I would not push the issue.

3- I do think you hould be looking at the breeder,as she may not be forthcoming to you.I know if I brought home a pup,that was displaying actions as your pup,I would be looking to my vet,and also looking at the upbringing & socialization of him while still in the breeders home.

I say,you have a sick dog,something is getting missed by your vet.
How long have you had Hollywood? Has he been with you for a couple weeks,days?
For a pup to not get up,and piddle on themselves,just does not seem right,for him to show no response.

4-I do not think,that he should be around another dog,until either the vet gets to the real issue,or possibly you get another vet,something is amiss with him.
Having another dog to trigger him,to see if he perks up,honestly,if he is a healthy sheltie,he should'nt need another dog or a trigger to get him going.

We're first time sheltie owners,but are seasoned owners of dogs thru the years(fosters),and have 2 other pets here in the home..believe me our Trapp did not need any other stimulation to display normal behaviour.

We will keep him in our prayers,that he soon comes round for you.It's so hard with our babes,as they cannot tell us were they hurt.And I do think that sheltie have a pretty high pain threshold.

If you are a fan of rescuing, then perhaps this is a pup that needs it. I'd not give up yet. I'm no expert, but older pups will always carry baggage. (I'm also no role model, as I gave back Ginnie and exchanged her for Indy after only 1 week, but it was the breeder who encouraged me to bring her back).

Since it seems like you've ruled out most health issues, then it looks like he just needs to acclimatize. Perhaps PM Granite (Janet). Newton seems to fall into a similar category, but is gradually coming out of his shell. And other rescuerer's on the forum - Elaine, I think and SheltieMom??
 
I agree with Barb. It sounds as if you have a rescue there already. This is a pup that needs you, and before you give up, I'd give it a bit more time. This poor little guy seems like he's had a tough life, and you may be the ones to help him. I know it isn't easy, but once he does come around he will never stop saying thank you!
 
I agree, with the others also.He deserves to have a loving caring home,and I think,as strange as this may seem,there is reason for every thing.
So with that said,I feel that he has a wonderful loving home right where he is.If health issues have been ruled out,he just needs more time,to acclimate himself.

I would'nt give up on him at all.Give him a big hug.We will keep him in our prayers that he comes round soon.
 
Thanks guys! My hubby got him to eat and drink by putting his food dish outside of his kennel and then setting him on the floor. Safe to say he was probably fed in his kennel before and might have been part of the problem. He has been watching us move around the house a bit this evening and when he is outside he is like a different dog! A little unsure about loud and sudden noises but actually interested. Maybe some improvement? Lol

Yay! It seems like he is seeing some similarities between his new home and his previous home. Maybe that's all it takes for him to start coming out of his shell.

WOO HOO, YAY!!! Hollywood will worship the ground you and your family walk on once he gets past whatever it is he needs to past :yes: Like all the others have said here, you already have your rescue baby :wink2:
