New Behavior is Troublsome

I didn't know they made minty ones! I think we had a choice between peanut butter and chicken. We went with the chicken one.
Well now this is funny!
I just read the label,and it does'nt say "peanut butter flavored,or chicken flavor"
Where did you get yours? I got what Walmart had for dogs. It came with a tooth brush,the tube of paste,and a thing to put on your finger to use first,to get the pup used tohaving something in thier mouth.
I did'nt use it,I went right for the tooth brush from the get go.

We got ours at Petco. We also got the toothbrush, but when that proved really hard to use in the back of Bentley's mouth (where all the stuff builds up) we tried the thing that goes on your finger. That didn't work too well, either. We now mostly just use Jonathan's scaler (since he's in dental school) and flossies.

Hi Pipersmom, having read this whole thread it seems like you are on the right road. We also got Ally as an 18 month old from Asta's breeder. She had the same scenario, lived outside with a pack of dogs, crated in the garage at night. Was not housebroken, and very shy. She came to the breeder when called but her heart almost pounded out of her chest the first time I picked her up!
When we got her home, Asta was there to show her the ropes. She lives for food so I don't recall issues with eating or drinking, but we could NOT get her to go in and out of doorways, even the sliding glass door. We had to leash her and coax her to get her to do it. Took longer than a puppy to housebreak, altho she would hold it all night. I think having Asta as a big sister took a lot of the stress off, since she really was a pack dog.
She is now a wonderful, loving (altho not cuddly) free-spirited girl, able to be off leash to do agility or our walks along the creek or other open spaces. So I think Hollywood will get there. Shelties are just SO sensitive. You seem very patient, and I think it will all pay off handsomely. He is a gorgeous dog, and I'm sure your daughter will love having him as a playmate. Please keep us posted!
Also, since he's having adjustment issues, I would make sure he is really secure and bonded with you, complete with some obedience training, before you get another dog, altho I am sure he will love having another dog around.

I'm thinking I got the peanut butter flavored toothpaste at PetSmart. I'm putting the grooming table up tomorrow, and I'm going to start with the brushing. I have one of those finger toothbrushes.
Sometimes you can get a kit with the toothbrush and toothpaste. I bought mine seperately.

This tooth paste is just what walmart sells.No flavorings added. His mouth smells nice & minty afterwards. It did come with a finger thing,although I do not use it on him. I do use it on Earnie,and he does alright with it,but will be getting another tooth brush for him.
He's never up until 2 weeks ago have his teeth brushed.My vet is amazed at how good his teeth look.

Although I don't understand breeders doing that to such a social animal... dogs are meant to be companions to humans
