New Food due to Vomiting/Possible Allergy

I am not a huge fan of feeding dogs fish either. But if it works for you, go for it. I feed Merrick Grain Free Buffalo and Sweet Potato and my sheltie does wonderful on it. Poops consistently and not very often, and never throws up or eats his poop or anyone else's. I used to feed Merrick Chicken but he really prefers the Buffalo. They also have a limited ingredient food that I might recommend.

Found a place local that sells Fromm, so I picked up a bag of the grain free salmon, will see how she does...

The guys eat Fromm. There is a ton of varieties also. My moms dog was pukey and switched with zero issues now. She knows he is allergic to pork but also is corn sensitive.

Oh and fish is poison literally so the guys seldom get the whitefish variety here

just for informational purposes- whitefish is not any particular species of fish- can be any fish that has white flesh.
if the ingredients say salmon or menhaden or an actual fish name, then that's what is in the food.
I refuse to buy anything that says whitefish because you have no idea what it really is. we have used salmon recipes though......

That's interesting but I fib :o I can eat fish I just don't care for it. Seafood it 100% poison though. Don't tell Sca or he will think he can get fish, Spitfire is unconcerned if it poisons me as long as he gets what he wants.

Just an FYI re fish: I feed two of my dogs the Fromm Whitefish and Potato recipe because they need a lower fat content. I emailed the folks at Fromm to ask about the origin of their whitefish. I've always found them to be very responsive and thorough in answering questions and this time was no different. Here's the information they gave me about their whitefish:

"In the Whitefish and Potato recipe we use Atlantic Whitefish. Our fish products do not contain harmful levels of mercury, toxins, or radiation. Our fish comes from sources caught specifically for human food production. There are many federal, state and regulatory groups such as the FDA that are constantly monitoring the safety of all waters from which food producing species are harvested. The fish we use is clean, safe, and supplies nutrients of excellent quality."

I am kinda wanting to find something else because the salmon is making me sick. It smells awful and makes her breath awful. Debating going another direction than fish. I am only at half Fromm half blue buffalo right now. I am glad I just bought a 4 pound bag because this just isn't working for me. I have come close to puking when I get a big smell of it and my pregnant wife refuses to go near it. :biggrin2:

It's definitely not rotten smelling, the fish smell is just exceptionally strong.

If you do need to stick with a fish I can tell you the Whitefish variety doesn't smell at all. I can't stand the smell of salmon either so I can sympathize!

Lots of varieties so no need to do fish. I would avoid the regular if you are having issues as it has chicken which some dogs are bothered by. None have corn but I think that is true on Blue also. Try the Duck or Pork ones. Sca and Spitfire rotate all the time and don't have issues but at least Sca is a known iron belly

The best brand for us is Go! natural from Petcurean - especially fit+free.
http://www.petcurean.com/for-dogs/go/

We've tried a lot of brands including Orijen, Acana, TOTW, Canidae, Fromm, Canine Caviar, Earthborn Holistic and many others, but Go seems best to me. Another one I really like is Annamaet. Certain recipes from Fromm don't look bad either.

Update:

We ended up switching to the non grain free whitefish recipe and completed the switch a few weeks ago. It definitely smells better than the grain free salmon. Beignet's breath is not nearly as dragon breath as before. Brushing seems to help where with the salmon it was pretty much noneffective.

So far, we have had no puking events since going completely Fromm. She seems to like it a lot. Slowly starting to give her other treats like baby carrots, bananas, and green beans to see if they cause anything.

Thanks for the help.
