New Here! :)

Welcome !! What adorable pups and a beautiful mum. I think i would have a hard time choosing just 1 of the pups.

The furbabies are genuinely tiny, although, I'd say Lacey thinks they are big enough

I think my heart is set on Dolly. I was there for them being born and will be here most of the way through their puppyhood (depending on when I get a job) which is a really rare experience without keeping the mummy and other dogs. She knows my smell better than anyone elses (not including her mummy) I'm hoping this will form a really good bond. I have a really nice bond with my other dog Logan because I rescued him from the pound. I really hope they get along, Logan has become extremely tolerant in his old age but I still won't be leaving them alone together for a very very long time

Belated welcome to the Forum! How exciting to have you with us from Ireland. The pictures of your Shelties are wonderful. I can't wait to hear all about Shelties in Ireland.

You say that but just wait until I talk your ear off about them

Ah how cute. Birch was born into my hands. His neck was flexed during whelping and I had to straigthen him out.:smile2: There were 3 other boys in the litter and I was pretty opened minded but Birch just seemed to take to me and I to him. In the end, I discided he was meant to be mine, though I turned down a gorgerous show bi blue:smile2:. Turns out while friendly to strangers and such he is pretty aloof. I am definitely his favorite person even above his breeder.

God, I'm glad nothing like that happened with Lacey. We had the vets all ready for us if something went wrong but I think me and mum would have completely freaked. Dad's a nurse so he's the level headed one who handles all the yucky bits. The biggest problem Lacey had was having the first one. Its her first time and because there were only 2 they obviously weren't moving around enough to force the first one out. Lacey was so cute though, she would push and push then turn around to look and there would be nothing there and she would get so confused! It was taking too long so me and mum started putting shoes on to rush her to the vet, dad picked her up to have a closer look and out popped the first pup! Apparently being lifted was what she needed.

Then Dolly came out backwards half an hour later and everything was fine. Its a small litter but its her first one and we really wanted at least 2 girls so Lacey did that and no more! :smile2:

I can't tell most people because they get all grossed out, its nice having somewhere with people who are used to it

Lovely Mum and georgeous puppies (both). My Pia is due to mate late this year and your pics make me quiver with joyous puppy anticipation!!!!!

I love Cork, particularly around Kinsale, Bantry and Ahakista. Whic end are you fom?

Ps. Welcome!

Whelping puppies is not for the faint of heart. Diva's first litter, the first one out came breech, his foot got stuck by what turned out to be a huge dewclaw. Diva was so wimpy about pushing but when he got caught she went into overdrive. I actually couldn't move him and his foot was turing blue so we jump into the car to go to the clinic for a c section. I was so scared she was going erupt her uterus she was pushing so hard. I pushed up and in with one hand out as a last ditch effort and I guess between that and her pushing he popped out in the sack and placenta and all. 9.5oz puppy for a 13.5" bitch.

I was sure he was dead and Diva had no idea what happened just the whatever it was was gone. I started working on him and yes gave mouth to nose CPR and he came around and let out 1 huge squeek. Diva swung around like "what is that?!" and immediately started taking care of him. He lived and is now 17" tall and living in California. His name is Porter and you can see a picture of him in my friends album. The whole litter was named after alcohol because after that start I really needed a drink. I had whelped many litter before but that was my first personal one. Good grief.:smile2:

This is the great bit really. They are old enough that she won't sit on them or do something to kill them (we stayed with them 24/7, which is why I left my job at the time I did, I was going to anyway and it seemed like a good time. Last time I was in college so mum and dad were having to take time off work) not everyone does stay with them all the time but at least then you are there if something goes wrong, you're less likely to lose one. They are young enough now that the mum looks after the pees and poos so we don't have to.
The first time we did it when they got to 8 weeks, there were 4 little poo machines running around and we had a 6 month old pup (accidental litter) whose house training got majorly set back.

God, I make it sound awful but watching them grow and get personalities is completely worth it. There is very little in life that is more wonderful than raising puppies but its hard work. So glad there are only 2 and the 2nd one will either be staying with mum or going to a friend that shows so I can still see her. Letting them go is so hard!

We are in Bandon but hopefully I will be getting a job in Cork city and living there. I'm too used to living in the city from college. I really want a house at the Lough in the city, there are loads of dogs walked around it so she can socialise.

I really don't know how to shut up, do I?
