Caro, my trainer says you can train a dog in two ways; you can be a dictator - ie, you do as I say or ELSE! Or you can be more democratic - ie, you do this and you'll be rewarded for it.
She asks us which method we would prefer being used on us
She teaches using the latter - positive reinforcement rather than compulsion through punishment.
On some dogs the 'dictator' method can be disastrous (as you discovered), so I prefer to stick with reward-based training.
As for her feelings on old Mr Milan, ahem, well I don't think he'd be allow near her dogs any time soon!
