newbie question

An AKC show...would require AKC papers. They do not require the dog to be handled by it's owner, though.

I am not sure about the other venues.

AKC does not require the owner to handle but if you get a title, the certificate will be sent to the owner of record and if you have never shown before you can not enter the Novice A class in either obedience or agility.

Good point!

It has literally been 20 years since I titled a dog.....so much to remember!

Layla and Bits are limited registration. Ala of Norwood Kennels said I could name them anything I wanted, so I used the Nattering Springs name for hem. Annie was registered, but not with AKC -- lord knows what she's under -- and was always Annie. We added a middle name -- Annie Laurie -- but not "officially."

Beckon was a show hopeful. Ala and I agreed on his name: Norwood Beckoning Breeze. As y'all know, he won't be shpwing, but it's lovely having the Norwood name in the house. :biggrin2:

I haven't registered Zoe yet. (The breeder did give me the papers, but I thought no rush - having trouble with the name too.) Will do it now.

Does she have to be registered with AKC before competing in obedience or agility? Thanks!

Breed

Yes she has to be registered to compete in any AKC venue. Don't wait along time because my friend waited a year and was charged alot mor money that it usually costs.I registered Sting on line.

Yes, that's correct. I never bothered because my contract required that he be neuteured, so he was out of the breeding circle anyway.

I only ask because if someday, I decide to do agility or obediance, will that be a problem if he is not registered in my name? I'm not sure if these trials are for purebred only or not (excuse my ignorance!)

AKC is the only one where it makes a MINOR difference. On the entry forms you'd have to list your breeder as the "Owner" and yourself as the "Handler" because AKC's records show your breeder still owns them.

Any other venue, NADAC, USDAA, CPE, won't care what the AKC registration says.

Good point, I forgot about that fact. Again, this is only if you are planning on doing AKC events. If you don't do anything with AKC, this is all irrelevant.

The other fact I think I left out of my story was that Edan was 7 months old when I brought him home. He was a Show Prospect that didn't show well because he wasn't built masculine enough for the judges. Because she was showing him, he had to be registered.

I TOLD you he's just so darn dainty and adorable looking! lol
He's one of my favourite looking Shelties in this forum... LOL Trust me they are all AWESOME.. but I do have a huge little soft spot for your Edan!! lol... he's just soooo handsome... Well, ok then also there are all the gorgeous puppies, like Bailey and Kaia, and now Jasper! etc.. hahaha, wow, seems like I have a sable obsession when I think about .. haha.. ok ok... I can't REALLY decide, but Edan warms my heart every time I see his pics.. aka the christmas lights one and the beach ones :)

I'll get on it then. I don't want any problems if/when when compete in an AKC show. It is so hard to pick a full name though! Thanks!
