No interest in toys or playing fetch

Bailey lovessssss toys. Shes always shaking a toy death or running around with the holler roller ball in her mouth. She also loves tug of war and fetch. Although She doesn't always bring me back the ball. Maybe she just likes toys because she's still a puppy.

They do tend to lose interest as they get older My boy will pick up sticks on walks and squeak a toy when he is happy but thats it - he was big on toys as a puppy.

When Tully was young I had a behaviourist in who showed me how to get her interested in toys. I got a special (new) toy for her that she only got for a couple of minutes each day and I increase the time she got the toy over a period of 2 weeks. She didnt get to see or play with that toy except on those occassions, and when she did get it I usually played with her. She soon saw that toy as a high value thing and it transferred to other toys. Of couse the downside of that is she pulls her toy box apart and drops toys on my foot and lap for me to play with her - and thats 2 1/2 yrs later so the technique prob worked too well.

Our lab Earnhardt could care less about fetching.not that we have'nt tried,even at a younger age,he was'nt interested.

You lucky person! If anything sits around here long enough Cadbury will have it in his mouth. Fetching is not so good, tends to just leave it somewhere.

When he was a pup and mum hung washing out on the line Cadbury would pull each piece off the line and drag it indoors into a pile in the kitchen. At the time he was only small so he had to jump and catch the clothing in his mouth and tug it off.

I thought it showed remarkable initiative. Oddly, mum was less impressed.

Well now LAUNDRY..is fair game ya know! Earnhardt will still tug laundry off the line.And it is a givin for Trapp to do it.i'ts really amazing to see these pups leap in the air..especially for those unmentionables~

I have'nt hung laudry out,unless it was blankets or sheets lately.As I really have to keep a good watch on Trapp.
Earnhardt does it..just for the heck of it!

I have been working on play drive with Deja for flyball. There are some great websites about how to increase your dog's desire to play and it all comes back to the owner. You have to play. You have to make whatever you want the dog to play with the greatest thing since sliced bread.

Will you share those links? I think they be interesting to check out.

I had to bring the boys to the office today because of a house showing. I forgot to bring toys for them, but one of the ladies found a balloon and blowed it up just enough for them to play with but not enough to burst. This balloon also had little fingers on it that were easy to grab.

The boys went nuts! They were tossing this thing around and chasing it like crazy! Because it's lightweight, it would just bounce around between them. I'm adding balloons to be my "toy" list - SUPERVISED of course! Never leave a deflated balloon lying around for munchies!

It just struck me as a great way to get them interested in chasing things.

I also recall doing bubbles with my forever pup, Timber! Well, it was mostly for the kids, but he joined in too! I must try this out again and see how it works for them!

Both of those are great ideas...I think I'll have to try them. I have noticed that Domino doesn't really like to put things in his mouth (except for food of course!) but does jump and roll around if I engage him. I think using a balloon or bubbles might encourage him to play without asking him to pick things up which doesn't seem natural to him.

I will be adding bubbles to my shopping list this week!

Megan seems to enjoy supervised play time toys rather than actual dog toys. She has a basket FULL of dog toys and she shows little to no interest in them at all
