Not looking forward to this....

I have a rescue sheltie that has ibs and has regular flare ups of bloody watery stools. I give him plain yogurt daily and watch what he eats as human food causes trouble. My other sheltie has been having loose stools and Ontario sheltie told me about giving a spoon of 100% pumpkin on her food . I also was told by others low fat diet may help. I also was told about the protien being to high in the food I was feeding and since I bought a lower fat food and lower in protien and feed the pumpkin and wow what a difference. I started all my dogs on the same regime and honestly can believe the change in all of them. All have firm stools less gas . My sheltie with ibs has never had firm stools. During my research I did come across a food called caliafornia natural lamb and rice grain free food . It has 21 % protien and 11 % fat . I know when your furkid has issues any input can be helpful. Good luck to you! This forum is such a great tool. Im so glad to have it!

California Natural Chicken and Rice is what I fed Pixie for two years while she had colitis, and it's what helped straighten her out along with a good probiotic and pumpkin when needed. I find the lamb formulas to be a bit too rich for Shelties, but others may have a different experience. You may find that the chicken blend is good at least at the beginning.

**update**

Hi everyone-

Thanks for all your well wishes and prayers. The vet said he was awesome and kept a great attitude, constant tail-waggin' and licks for anyone who was still long enough, even when they had to force the medicine down him for the enema treatments. :dead:

We did confirm that he has IBD. So, he's on Prednisone, Flagyl, and Sulfasalazine to help clear this current flair-up. I'm just glad they were able to diagnose him and not come back saying he's perfectly healthy.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed that Natural Balance Limited Ingredients will agree with him; prescription food has to be a last last last choice because of cost. He'll be ok, just have to keep a vigilant watch over him.

I've said before I felt my life was kinda dull...careful what you say...

I am glad you got a diagnosis at last and that he was such a good boy for his tests. Hopefully the treatment and food will get him on the road to recovery soon.

I'm so glad for you that you know what you are dealing with and have a way to deal with it. That makes all the difference in the world. This should also help lower the stress level in the house ! All the best.

Wow -- knowing a diagnosis is half the battle! Now the mystery is cleared up, and you have options and plans. We'll keep Pogo in our prayers.

Hugs to you both! So glad that you now know for sure what you are dealing with so you can move on with treatment.
Best wishes!

I'm so glad that you were able to find out exactly what is wrong with him. I hope that the new food works and that the meds get him back to normal. Keep us posted on how he is doing.

I hope with the right food and some time, Pogo will grow out of it like Pixie did. Natural Balance is a great food, but if he doesn't do well on that one, don't be afraid to try a different one. California Natural Chicken and Rice was the one that finally worked for Pix. We'll keep fingers and paws crossed that he improves and stays that way! Knowing the problem is half the battle. Good luck!
