Not really 'obedience' related but is....

Piper used to be bad on his downs and then I remembered his level 1 with another trainer. She taught us stand-down-stand and in no time he got it. Your also less likely to get a down on a sit ( when taught sit-down together with the sit followed by the down). I also taught Finnie this way and he's great at his downs and has a good understanding of the stand.

Well thank heavens stand is not on the test because we aren't good at that yet.

So, I did some training in the house. I ended up with hives after trimming up some plants so have to let my allergies calm down a bit - we're indoors in A/C for a bit. We are working on a loose lead, check, have the sit, check, even maintained a good heel going down the single stair from family room to dinette, check (we don't do most stairs).

I did DOWN two ways; with a concise, solid DOWN with hand signal (hand flat in front of nose moving flat to the floor and staying on the floor). He did not immediately, but did DOWN. LOTS of praise, YES!, high pitched, excited voice from mommy and a good double handed rubbing! We heeled a bit more and I tried another time, this time with only the hand signal, no voice command and same thing. We will try outside later as well.

See trainer #2 says he knows it. He CAN do down, he just does not in class.

Funny thing though... I have a retractable leash for our outdoor, you take your time, sniff away, stop to smell the roses walks. And then I have the short leash which is my training leash. Brodie hides when he sees the training leash come out. And I do try to make training fun - I use lots of praise, YES!, double butt scratches (his favorite) and I reserve the baked hot dog treats for training time. But he still hides when the leash comes out....

Try playing with him first (reserve a favourite toy you use ONLY for this) and get him all hyped up and tell him your going to do some work. After the session play with him again with lots of praise. Eventually he'll come running when he sees the leash, I know my guys do!
