Nursing broken bones!

What a nightmare! She was so agitated with the fireworks for the July 4th celebration in our neighborhood that I decided to take her out of her crate and hold her to calm her down. She is accustomed to vaulting into my arms from the open crate door. This time she missed her step and caught her foot on the wire at the bottom of the crate. She fell face forward with her foot caught in the wire. I grabbed her right away but it was too late. She had broken one of her toes. I took her to the vet and had x-rays done boy did they look nasty! The bone is snapped right in half with very little to help it hold in place for it to heal. She was sedated and the toe was set and a spoon splint was placed on the foot to hold the toes in place. She is on strict crate rest for two weeks, then we will take another x-ray to be sure that the toe is in place to heal. Her bandage cannot get wet so every time she has to go outside I have to go through the ritual of putting plastic cling wrap on the bandage so she doesn't soil it with the dew from the grass. I also put some potty pants on her just in case she can't wait for mom to get her ready to go out. So far she's been really good about it.

So sorry to hear this .Poor Lacey Lou. It is so hard to keep them from running around-good luck. Hope she mends fast.

I'm so sorry your baby girl is going through this. Keep us updated on her condition.
Hey, at least she looks good in pink and green!

What a shame, poor girl. I hope she heals quickly. And oh, the plastic wrap drill....poor you! Have you tried slipping a gallon plastic bag (not the zip top kind) over her leg with a rubber band? Sometimes that's easier. Good luck!

Awww, poor Lacey Lou! What a freak accident. I just went through Ally having to have a toe amputated due to a tumor. It was also on her back leg. I can totally relate to the frustration of keeping the bandage dry, our grass is often wet in the AM too. I used the plastic bag the newspaper comes in, cut it short and a little duct tape to tape it to the ace bandage on her leg. The duct tape will last you a few times.

I hope she heals quickly, I think it's much harder on us in a way, we feel so bad for the furkids. But Ally bounced back like nothing happened and I bet your girl will too. Hugs to you and her. :hugs

So sorry. When Hollie was in a cast we got an empty IV bag and taped that over her cast. It is thick and difficult to get holes in. Hope she is better soon.

I was cleaning out my closet and found some old doggie boots that had been given to me. They were way too big for my shelties to use so I put them away in a basket in the back of the closet. Wow what a find for me. They have a rubber foot pad and are made of jersey material with a velcro strap at the top. I put it on Lacey-Lou's cast and it FITS! So now she has a boot covered cast and can go outside without my having to go through the cling wrap/plastic bag routine. So far it's working just fine. She is doing remarkably well being cooped up in her crate. Once in a while she complains but mostly she sleeps and plays with the toys she has with her and chews on her cow hoof. We go back on Friday for another x-ray and evaluation of the bone set. Hopefully everything will be fine and she only has to wait until it's knit back together.
