Obedience Dream Finished?

Ask the rehab specialist that you're going to see about walking on the land treadmill. It works the hind legs and you can just the incline progressively to work them more.

Its likely I won't have access to a land treadmill. :(

My in-laws have one but I don't think its set up.

We were recommended a ladder too or a cavaletti for strengthening for Deska. Also walking backwards is great for rear end strengthening. Walking on her back legs is probably too advanced at this stage.

Just a regular ladder? I've been harassing my DH to cut up some 2x4's for her to walk over but he hasn't gotten around to it yet. I do have a regular ladder I could use though.

I was going to look into some cavaletties but I'll avoid spending the money if I can.

I tried making her walk backwards and had her walking on her hind end again last night. She did much better this time than the last time but still looked less than impressed. I'll try doing both on a regular basis with some kibble as a reward and see how it goes. Thanks for the suggestions!

If you're just starting the walking backwards, I found it helpful to start Snap in a hallway next to the wall, so it would help keep him straight. I used a tasty treat right in front of his nose and "pushed" him into a back up at first. I also used a clicker to click any hind leg movement.

Re cavaletti: you can improvise with lots of straight things: mop / broom handles, jump bars........

Glad she is doing so much better. Keep on the work you are doing with her. Good luck tomorrow and let us know how you make out. Hopefully it will not be too hot a trip for her.

True enough. Maybe I'll tell DH to forget it and go pick up some PVC tubing at home depot after work...

What do you think of this?

Once she has improved further you could try teaching 'sit up and beg'. This is supposed to strengthen the hip and back muscles.

I taught it to Cadbury purely for fun but have noticed an improved ability in him to spring (ie over jumps) and also he seems to have more strength to thrust himself.

It took him months to build up the strength he needed to do an unsupported beg as he is a large dog with a big chest - but now he will do it for anyone.

Down here you can get them cheap at garage sales after they sit and don't get used for a few years

That may be the case here too, but we do not have the room for one at our house. We're doing renovations (with no end in sight at this point) and have one room torn apart, another storing the stuff that goes in the torn apart room and a basement full of belongings and renovation supplies.

I'll keep an eye out for one though. God knows I like a kijiji deal. :smile2:
