Thank you Chris and because of yesterday's event, I am practicing, practing her recalls. I need to take Megan to a 'safe' place she can have a lot of space so I can really teach her recall..

I've been making Bailey sit and wait before we go out the front door. I go out first. She has to wait until I release her. I actually forgot to do it this morning. I stepped out the door and started walking off the porch. I felt a tug on the leash. I turned around and there was Bailey sitting at the door waiting for me to release her. She got a ton of treats and kisses for that!

I also make her sit and wait at the end of the sidewalk before we cross the street. She did it about 75% of he time on this mornings walk. I do this, so if she ever gets loose, hopefully she will stop at the end of the sidewalk because she's not allowed to cross without my permission.

Megan is not quite to that level as of yet, but she will be :yes:

Oh my gosh....I went through that couple weeks ago with Mya.
My daughters and I were walking home from a park and we crossed the street. Suddenly Mya sees a dog behind her, goes balistic and yanks the leash out of my hands and barrels across the road to meet this dog..

Here I am, a pack-mule, carrying my kids jackets, sweaters, water bottles and now I have to go and rescue my fur-brat. A good stern "NO!!" stopped her short from being hit by a car. Believe me...she came sucking up. I grabbed the leash, told her she's a good girl and continued home.

It's funny how I told her '' Good girl" when I had thoughts of strangling her.

Well done!

I think we've all made the mistake of screaming harshly at our dogs when they've gone on a runner...and we think the dogs are going to come back to THAT screaming lunatic? I did it once and learned my lesson fast. I guess training works both ways! :yes:

It's so important to keep your cool - not to go chasing them (it becomes a game), and not to scream like a banshee (just scares them further away). Even if you are hyper-ventilating inside, you need to stay "happy, happy, happy, come to mommy!"
