Our newest addition, Bear!

Aww he is a cutie!!!

We are currently in the midst of potty training our Bandit, he was born 5/15/12 so right at 11 weeks old. Sooooo frustrating some days and then some days it's like WOO WOO he 'gets' it....then other days he is right back to oh I need to go let's piddle HERE.../sigh....

Keep at it, don't give up..everyone will tell you patience and repetitive pays off...and it does...just takes a bit. :o)

He's using the pee pad for now because we have two flights of stairs & the main door too go outside is down those stairs. He can't get up and down our steep steps yet.

Just an FYI of what I did. I lived in a condo when I got Koji, basically 3 floors. Top was the bedroom. I basically carried him when it was time to take him out. That way, no accidents since he's not walking. I did that for a long while, until he figured out the stairs and could hold it.

I would suggest figuring out some sort of potty schedule. And then carrying him downstairs when it's time to go out.

Also, as for the pads, when I paper trained Miko, you start out with a BIG area, so they can't miss. Then start to shrink the area until you're left with a pad. That took Miko about a week to figure out. I think he was about 11 weeks.

I have read it's hard for them to understand housebreaking (as in pottying outside only) when you allow them to use a pad indoors. But that's just what I read. Not sure since they are super smart!

Just some ideas. Welcome to the board and Bear is super duper cute!

Cheryl gave you good advice.

If you work the pee pads work out if you have an area where you keep Bear.
My method when I left I used the three month old version. Three months, three hours and return. Four months old, four hours, return and out the door to pottie. I never went longer then 8 hours.

Bear is a puppy, and its just called patience. He'll catch on. I know somedays its now an easy process. If your doing something in your home, and can't watch him, cage him. I used to leash them to me if I had to get involved in something.

Steps: I used a leash when they got a bit bigger. We would work on three steps and as they got more confident we would take more. It was the same as coming down the steps. My boy Lucky caught on quick. Lil' Lady was not
keen on them, so I carried her for a long time. Of course she is the Royal Highness.

Good luck, best wishes, Bear is really a darling shelite.

I also meant to add....

regarding going down the stairs, I know Koji didn't quite get it until he grew a bit. But then, think about how BIG those stairs are at that height. Maybe Bear just needs to grow some. Once Koji figured them out and then grew some to make it even easier, OMG, he was the stair master, it was his playground.

Give it some time. Remember, nothing will happen overnight.

Congrats on your new pup! I have a bear, myself.."Little Bear".. He looked like a baby black bear when I got him (still does sometimes now, too haha). What an adorable picture! Yup-he looks like a grizzly cub haha!

Thanks Cheryl! I think I'm going to make his pad area bigger so he won't miss. Most of the time he goes over to the pad by himself & goes potty but it's only a 50/50 chance that he'll hit the pad lol. He's trying though! Gotta give him credit.

I have been carrying him down the steps from time to time to go out, but we don't really have a routine going on. I need to start that. Today I found out he can totally climb our two flights of stairs with no problem at all, its just the going down part that intimidates him.

Thank you! :) I'm going to give the leash idea a try. My current mantra is "patience is key"

Aww, you have a bear cub too! :) how sweet. Both of yours are gorgeous, I saw an earlier post with their pictures.

Oh yeah. I think going down will take some time and maybe him growing. I saw Koji almost flip head over heels. When they're that small, going down is like doing a handstand. Think about it that way. But yay on the going up. :) Good way to build muscles too.

Definitely make the area bigger for now, and then slowly, make it smaller. I think he'll start to get it on the pad once he realizes where he's supposed to be aiming. LOL.
