Hanna ( 21 months) is 14.5 inches and at 17.2 pound she feels really solid, I can feel her ribs still but this is as heavy as I want her. I can't imagine her with almost 6 more pounds. You might want to get started on Callan now.

I also have an overweight 12 month old. He was neutered at 6 months and that is when he started to get chubby. I feed him 1/3 cup of Fromme grain free twice a day. He does get too many treats during the day. I am definitely going to try grean beans and lettuce.I was curious as to what type of dog food is best for weight loss. Any suggestions?

Savannah my almost 9 mth old is on Fromm but I am starting to really transition her off. Kaleigh started getting a bit chunky after spaying so I got her off kibble, I did add carrots then as my Vet suggested it. When I started adding mashed carrots, she didn't act so famished, and she shed the excess quick-so win/win...green beans work well too, they just aren't as well received from my girls. I think the treats can really be the culprit, so try switching that out first. My girls get bones more than treats...cleans the teeth and they don't really add calories...

Good Lord, yes, especially at 14 inches. Dickens at 20.5 inches gets one cup per day, supplemented with about five ounces of beef in the form of raw cubes and jerky. He's not underfed, and he's not food-crazed. Cut it to half a cup and let him continue to have his high-protein treats. He'll lose weight and you won't have to feel guilty for starving him.
Here is a bit of advice from the queen of trying to slim down -- MELLI.
Instead of going by the scoop of some sort, go by grams. Get a food scale with the "tare" function (resets to 0 to compensate for the container). While a scoop is stop-gap, meaning you have only large increments to change, weight is totally different.
Look at your feeding guide for your food. Find out how many grams per cup. Then figure out what you are feeding. Example 1 cup is 101 grams (Fromm Lamb & Lentil while Acana Ranchlands is 120 grams per cup). Pick a number perhaps 10 grams less than what you are feeding. Every two days drop a gram or two. This reduces the food slowly so the dog does not perceive the change. This causes gradual and healthy weight loss. I make 5 days worth of AM/PM feedings for each dog at a time and store in a small container. It is very very effective and you can really fine tune that feeding amount.
That is our tip.
As to training treats . . . I have some freeze dried pieces (Orijen). What I do is take some kibble pieces and crumble the Orijen into a bag. I shake it up and the kibble now smells delicious but is still kibble. I can pull that out of the day's ration of food or not, but it is kibble and easy on the tummy without fear of the fatty human foods or treats that have bad ingredients.

Sorry Barb - I understood that to mean after you were done with Indy!
Gosh......I've been monitoring weight on both of them for months. Indy HAS dropped down to 31 lbs. I figure 26 would be good weight for him. Callan has jumped since his neuter but slowing down.
I unfortunately still have him on TOTW puppie hi prairie. The only reason why i have not taken him off is all the other alternatives I have looked had even higher fat then this. Weird ! I like grain free, btw. I've not increased his portions for 6 months. So until I decide on new food, I think I will have to decrease the kibble and increase wet food.

Since I posted this 2 months ago Simba has been at the vet and weighed and measured again. He is now 17 inches tall and 26 pounds. I was told he is not overweight as his rib cage and spine can be felt. He has also been put on a special diet after 3 cases of gastroenteritis. He is on hills i/d. Can anyone recommend another brand that is also good for sensitive stomachs? I live in Ireland so most brands sold in the UK are also sold here
