Candy Cane is now 3 months old. It is hard to believe that we picked her up one month ago. She is still quite afraid of the car and walking down stairs is not hight on her list of fun things to do.

I am not familiar with Shelties' herding behavior. From the young age of 10 week I have noticed that Candy lifts her front paw and points. I don't know if this is normal for a Sheltie or not. She seems to point at anything that moves. Has anyone else had a pup do this? Any good references for herding behavior? Thanks. Pictures soon.
 
That went quick!!

Both mine did and still do on occasions the 'pointing' thing, particuarly Revel. Don't know if it's an indicatior of herding behaviour though. Have you any pictures of Candy Cane doing this, it is so cute:smile2:
 
nope no pointing here, only lunging, running after, barking and jumping after anything that moves:lol:
Leo has been jumping from back seat to front seat of the car the moment we got him at 9 weeks, and if we did not put carpet over the wooden stairs we would have had quite a few accidents as taking tight turns goes against gravity sometimes...:biggrin2:
what can I say- boys, they different:wink2:
 
I haven't seen pointing, but I have seen two distinct styles of herding between Abbie and Duncan. Duncan is an in-your-face, barking maniac who becomes this super-sheriff when presented with the opportunity. Abigail does some chasing, but will lower her head to track her 'sheep' and then will drop to the ground (Border Collie-esque) to wait out her next move.

So why not point? Sometimes my dogs will lift a paw if they see something new and are curious.

Cran and Dix like to lift a paw when they sit and are waiting for good stuff :wink2:
 
Paw lifting can be a sign of stress, uncertainty or difference.

I have read but don't know if it is true that pointing was a behavior that resulted from a dog freezing when then notice prey like should I go after it ,leave it alone, what should I do? Dogs who showed the same behavior were bred together to develop the pointing breeds.

Justice used to lift his paw on his sit stays out of stress. I have seen my dogs lift their paws when trying to figure out a problem in obedience.
 
After more observation I believe she is assessing the situatuation. When she does this it seems to be very brief.
