Peticure

I ordered one of the peticure elite more than 6 wqeeks ago and still have not recieved it. They are back ordered wicked. I'm going to try to order through Amazon and see what happens. Has anyone else had this problem on delay of order ??

I was grooming the furkids today and nicked poor little Barkley big time on the quick when trimming his nails. He bled for hours!! :( It looked like there'd been an axe murder in my house.:uhoh: I have decided once and for all I am not doing that again...I just hate clipping nails! Would those of you who have Peticures give me a review? Do they work? Easily? What size do you have, I see there are two sizes but the "petite" is for animals under 15 pounds. Do you all have the bigger one? Most importantly would you recommend it for a klutz like me? :rolleyes2: Thanks!!

I haven't tried the peticure so I can't recommend it but I'm guessing all it is is a glorified dremmel tool. You can probably get a dremmel for much cheaper (if you don't already have one) and you can use it for multiple purposes.

I know that the peticure has some sort of guard on it but I don't think its really neccesary (at least for shelties) if you trim the fur on your dogs paws. When I was using the dremmel on Sadie I hit my own hands repeatedly and it didn't hurt once. Being a puppy Sadie got tired of sitting still and moved a couple of times. I'm sure I touched her with it a few times but she had no pain either. When the rotary tool makes contact with skin for a second or less it doesn't hurt, only if you hold it there.

Personally I'd get a dremmel if you don't already have one, and check out the link I posted earlier in this thread on how to use it. But maybe there is something else I don't know about the peticure. In either case, still check out the link, the tools are similar enough that alot of whats there will still apply and there's alot of good tips and info.

I love using the dremmel compared to the clippers, I feel so much less stressed and so does Sadie, I actually look forward to it! I think Sadie likes it to because it means she gets treats for just being still. Sadie is a different dog when I use the dremmel compared with trying to clip her nails.

The rotary tool is great too because once you get the nail down to a certain point you can some times see where the quick is (I can see it from the bottom of the nail by the pad) and know exactly when to stop.

I did the same thing last week when I was doing Madi's nails. She didn't bleed but for a little bit, but now she AND I are scared of using the clippers again :no:

I've seen the dremmel at Wal-Mart. You can use it just like you buy it? No tools necessary? Do you just file the nail down? What about hitting the quick? Will it bleed like with the clippers?

Its my husband's dremmel so I couldn't tell you what heads it comes with but I believe it comes with a few. You will probably have to by some fine grinding bands but they are very inexpensive, I think around $5.00 for 12.

yes, you just file the nail down, you go about it by applying the dremmel for a few seconds at at a time (no more than 3 seconds) and going from nail to nail, not just working on the same one. Its still possible to hit the quick but as you get the nail short you can some times see it (the lady who wrote the article said so and I could see Sadie's anyway), so you can tell how far you have to go. The lady also stated that if you go to far it doesn't seem to hurt them like it does when cut into it with clippers, I'm guessing because its more gradual. I suppose there's always the potential for bleeding but if you're being careful even if you do hit the quick I wouldn't think it would bleed as much.

Thanks, guys. I will check out the dremmel link. Meantime I am starting to get worried. I've had him crated all day because whenever he comes out he starts the nail bleeding again. He's fine if we keep him quiet but as soon as he walks on the rug or grass it starts. I am going to have to try to get my vet tomorrow (a holiday weekend naturally) if we can't get it stopped. We've packed it with flour and put pressure on but I think he just keeps rubbing it. Aaarrggghhh!

Ann - my mom works for a vets office and she has always told me that if I knick the girls to jam the nail in a bar of soap. I haven't knicked any of them so I don't know how well it works by you may want to try it. Let me know if you do try it and if it works. Hope it stops soon for you!
 
Ann If Barkleys' nail is still bleeding from him hitting it try a pressure bandage. :wink2: place a cotton nonstick bandage over the nail that is affected then use that tape they sell that sticks to itself. you can buy it at wal-marts. wrap it just for a day and it should be fine. That's what the vet did for my Tasha. She had a staple stuck in her paw pad. :uhoh:They removed it and it seemed ok then it started bleeding a bit so he pressure dressed it with that clinging gauze. no tape needed it sticks to itself. you may want to place some triple antibiotic ointment on it since it has been aggrevated a bit.
 
Can you get some quick-stop styptic powder from the pet store maybe?

The soap idea is a good one, I guess the waxiness must keep it from bleeding

I only ever nicked the end of Sadie's quick and it barely bled. Of course it sounded like I was killing her, drama queen that she is!
 
Thanks to everyone for all of your suggestions. We left him in the crate tonight and I did do a pressure bandage with vet wrap that I think helped. Of course he'd chewed it off in the hour we were out but he seems to be OK now...no bleeding at the moment. I'm going to keep him quiet through the night and hope he's over it tomorrow and investigate another way to cut nails!!!!

PS ~ this forum is just the best, how did we do without it?! Where else can you go when it's a holiday with an emergency and have a whole group of concerned Sheltie owners pitch in with ideas. I am so thankful for all of you! :smile2:
