I agree, what a wonderful forum. It has helped me SOOO much in the short time I've had Madi :)

Hope that Barkley's little nail is healed up this morning and you won't have any more issues with it. I called my husband this morning and told him that we have to buy a dremmel. He said, "Cool, more power tools for me!" :lol:
 
Update

After a quiet night, I took Barkley out this morning in the very wet grass from all the rain we've had and his nail started bleeding again. Not alot, but 24 hours after the incident enough to worry me so off we went to the vet who thankfully had morning hours today. They bandaged it and gave me a plastic bootie for him to wear outside and said it will have to stay bandaged for the weekend. (Goodie, he's already made inroads into getting it off!!:eek2:)

So here's what I learned from this experience. First, I will never never NEVER clip nails again! I'll either invest in the Peticure or spring for the $18 charge at my vet's to have them clipped there.

Second, the vet told me if you don't have styptic or Quick Stop in the house, as Shaun said, you can use a bar of soap although it can be tough I found to stuff a squirming bleeding puppy's paw into it! They also said you can pack the nail with flour or corn starch.

So much for a quiet, stress free holiday weekend! :uhoh: Thanks again to everyone for the support and advice! :winkgrin:
 
Well, I just ordered the Peticure online, I think it's the Power one with all the bells and whistles. Sparky and Disco have dark nails and Max has white, but I'd feel a whole lot better knowing they would be more comfortable with getting their nails done if it didn't hurt.

When I get it and try it, I will post my comments.

It's easy if the puppy has white nails. I've trimmed many, many shelties (white and black nails) and never had a bleeder. Including my brother's 4 month old squirmer. With her (and every other Sheltie), I hold them upside down in my lap. I sit with my legs crossed, put their butts in the hole, and cradle their heads with my left elbow. Then, I start with their front. I put my index finger in the empty space, right above their big pad, but under the little individual pads, and with my thumb, I push down gently. It makes the nails stand out more. If the dog is wiggling, it's harder for them to get away because of how I hold them. I can just put my other hand on their chest, and say "NO" loudly, and hold them. It took the squirmer 3 tries with me. Then, start on the outside nail and work in. Look at it from the side, and trim right until the quick (not right at it, but right before.) If it's a black nail, look at the bottom of the nail. There are two parts to it, so you can see where the quick ends. It'll look almost like a v within a larger V. Just trim after the inner v (that's where the quick ends.) Trim all the front nails, same thing with the back (if the dog is a runner, they might not need trimmed.) Then I just trim the fur. It's easy once you get used to it, really! And I trim mine with toenail clippers (human ones.)
 
Ann - you have jinxed me!! Just kidding!! I trimmed Marlie's nails yesterday and I made her bleed! She was really good though and laid there while I got the bar of soap. I just took the soap and kind of scrapped it against her nail and violia! the bleeding stopped so it does work. She is such a good girl about her nails! Since I made one dog bleed I figured I would wait until another day to trim the other two's! :winkgrin:
 
Sorry, Shaun! After my last experience I haven't trimmed any nails. I ordered my Peticure but the website says it takes 4 to 6 weeks to arrive, I guess they're in high demand. I'm glad Marlie was a quick bleeder. That's always been the case with ours too until my recent experience with Barkley.

Speaking of Barkley, the poor little guy is jinxed too. After a month on Doxycylene for Lyme disease, he began limping again last week on the same leg he was gimpy on when he was diagnosed with Lyme. So tomorrow he goes in for xrays to rule out orthopedic issues. If his leg is OK, he'll go back on the antibiotic for a run of six to eight weeks. I feel so bad for him...this after I butchered his nail! :no:
 
My Peticure finally arrived !!

I tried it on the dogs and it works well. You just have to get them use to the noise it's not very loud but it's a different noise so they whimper. Even Tasha, the big 13 y.o. baby.:lol: I think you will like it Ann!! Just get the treats out till they adjust to the noise. It works well even on Tasha who is 75 pounds, with very large thick nails.:cool:
 
Well, I'm not sure this is gonna work for me or not. It's gonna take ALOT of work.

I tried to trim Madi's nails this past weekend and she has taken to growling and biting at me. She doesn't even let me touch her nails to look at them. She didn't want treats either. She sees the clippers and she runs to her kennel.

Maybe with it not looking like the nail clipper I can "start over". But even today I tried to check out her nails and she freaked out on me. So I don't know how to go about her letting me even touch her feet.
 
I ordered the Peticure too. So now just waiting for it to arrive. I actually just take the very tips off when I trim the nails. Happy's are all black and Callie has a mix. Neither is very fond of the nail trimming but I want them to have healthy feet so trimming it is until the Peticure arrives. :yes:
