Pin Brush

I ordered the 35mm and its supposed to arrive on Monday! I can't wait. Indy's coat is so thick it really a job to keep it from matting up.
Bacca's is not nearly so thick. Maybe I have to get the 20mm for him too! Love to shop for my pups! :wink2:

The 35mm arrived today and it is REALLY long. I think it's going to require a whole new technique for brushing. I think it will work great on Indy, but perhaps too much for Bacca.....so I'm now thinking about spending the next $50 to get the 20mm or 27mm for him. I actually popped into the pet store today to see what they had....nothing....just your regular 1/2 inch brush.

I'm thinking about a new slicker too...and perhaps a new....(fill in the blanks!)

I use it two ways!

I line brush with it (really, really helps in those really thick spots), and brush like a regular brush.

It works wonders in the hocks and tails (and feathers and ruff)!

It's also perfect for right out of a bath (I brush mine about every 30 minutes after a bath.)

All this talk about brushes saw me buying a CC 27mm oval pin brush and medium boar bristle brush! I just had a very enjoyable time grooming Romeo with my new brushes! And I got ice-on-ice! (I found the distributor here and went right down after work!!)

This thread has been really helpful. I too, went to Pet Supermarket and got a little pin brush. Right now it's probably okay, but in a few months I'll need to get some "real" brushes.

That tote looks really nice, but it's pricey. I'm going to check out Lowes and Home Depot to ascertain if they have any less expensive tool totes that might work well.

Actually I was in Walmart the other day and I noticed "craft totes" (look in the sewing/craft section) that looked pretty similar. But since I already ordered my tote, I didn't look any closer.

I ordered the CC Gold 20mm brush and now waiting on it to arrive.

Interesting, I found that the 35mm on Indy's thick, thick undercoat did not work well for line brushing, but did excellent for the final sweep. But the 35mm on Bacca's much finer and less dense coat worked great! Exactly the opposite of what I expected.

Indy has so much undercoat that the 35mm just picked up too much fur at a time. With him I can only work on small sections, so I expect the 20mm might work better. TBD - will let you know

Ah, Walmart! Thanks, I always forget they have a good sized craft section.

Also, on the brushes:

Do you buy the full size 8 1/2" length or the shorter one?

What size slicker?

Combs?

I went to Chris Christiansen's website and drooled over all the expen$ive stuff, but then choked because I couldn't make up my mind what sizes of product to order.

This past weekend I went to a sheltie grooming seminar and they went over all the brushes and what to look for. In the pin brush, they said to look for a brush that does not have those 'finished' ends (they look like little nail heads, as those will get stuck in the sheltie fur), to look for a 'heavier' brush and one that fits well in YOUR hand. The slicker brush should be very soft and again the size will depend on your comfort and your sheltie and how much fur he/she has. One thing they all said is not to skimp on the thinning shears and invest in good ones. As far as the combs went, they also went over those. Most of them liked the ones steel ones that had the two different spaced teeth on each end, they said the length of the teeth should depend on the length of the sheltie coat too. It was very informative.

I went with the full length brushes. The CC ones fit nicely in your hand. The problem with my cheap pin brush is that about 1/3 of the pins are now pushed into the rubber, so only 1/2 of a pin is poking out!

I have a standard issue slicker that's about 3 x 2 inches. I like this size. Anything bigger, I think, would be clumsy. I am thinking about upgrading to a CC slicker soon.

Part of the reason for the tote, is right now all this stuff is in a basket. When I go to groom, a big part of the process is emptying out the basket and lining up the brushes. Much easier if the brushes are easily grabbed, as I tend to switch various brushes and combs as I groom, depending on what I encounter (e.g. matts, heavy undercoat, etc.)

Thanks Ania! Great advice!

As for the shears, you can easily spends over $100 for true professional grade.

Don't buy walmart brand or even you're standard variety pet store version. They just don't cut it (no pun intended! :wink2:). But if you go to a pharmacy, you can get some fairly decent "people" shears for about $20-$30. Note: this are throwaways, however. When they wear out, toss them. Don't even think about having them sharpened.

I never found thinning shears at all in pharmacies/Walmart/Target/KMArt. I broke down and ordered from PetEdge and got a shears set- 2 straight and 1 thinning.
