Could this also be a symptom of a food allergy? What are you feeding her? Maybe a limited ingredient kibble or even raw food will her help her.

That's a great idea, Randi.

Has Maggie recently switched foods? Or maybe it could be an allergy that she recently developed.

Any new changes can be a possibility. New carpet, flooring, furniture, laundry detergent, mulch, snow melting stuff.....anything new?

I would definitely get a second opinion before considering putting her down if that is what your vet is suggesting. I know alot of people here have had great success with Vibrant pets but I have to be honest also. My 2 dogs would not touch their food with it added and yes I tried a small amount to begin with. When Gypsy got near her food with it on she sneezed and coughed like crazy so I sent mine off to another member here who uses it. Maybe if it is out of your budget at the current time you could ask Lee if he might send a sample. It can be alot of money to put out when you are dealing with vet bills also.

Maggie Mae Update

Thanks for all your comments. Maggie did have a full blood panel done recently. The results are all pretty normal for a 10-year-old dog. We are taking her back in again today and the vet techs are going to trim all the hair between her toes and make sure we can dry her feet thoroughly after she goes out in the snow. She is having some trouble walking because her feet are swollen.

She hasn't had a change in diet or circumstances in a long time. The only thing that changed is we've had a very snowy, wet, and cold winter. When we moved here 18 months ago the winter was very mild and she didn't have to go potty in the snow. We are going to try everything.

We feed her California Natural which has very few ingredients - no corn. We started it about a year ago when we got Fillie. Fillie did so much scratching and biting at herself - she's done really well on this food - both of them have luxurious, gorgeous coats. I'm hoping the food is a good one. Of course, there are people with wonderful, healthy dogs who buy Atta Boy! :o

Thank you all so much. Will keep on doing the updates - maybe we'll try a second opinion from another vet, also. The one we have has a good, solid reputation and is caring and conservative - but still . . .

Julie

If you haven't all ready and if possible, I'd put booties on her feet when you walk her. Maybe the cold and wetness is irritating her.

California Natural is great for dogs with allergies. They do have 3 different flavors: chicken, lamb and whitefish. If you have been feeding the same flavor for a while, it's possible she has developed an intolerance. I would try transitioning her to a different flavor. It might be worth a shot.

Have you changing floor or carpet cleaners recently?

I hope you can figure out what is causing her swollen feet. Poor girl :(

Thanks for the input about California Natural. We've tried booties but I think she resists because her feet hurt so much. Maybe we could try socks instead. Yesterday at the vet's they cut the hair between all the toes and we could really see what we're dealing with. Even the vet tech cried. Our vet said that her immune system just isn't working very well right now. We keep hoping. She's comfortable today but had pain after they worked on her paws yesterday. Thanks so much for your concern. She is my little heart song!

I always wipe Gypsy and Chandler's feet with babywipes real well when I come in from the snow and salt maybe that will help some with the irritation. get the Hypoallergenic if you are going to try them. I sure hope she starts feeling better soon. I will keep her in my prayers.

Thanks for the hint about the baby wipes - I've been using towels, but that just dries the paws and doesn't wipe the snow and salt off. I just got little baby socks to put on her paws when she has to go out. She is the most patient little dog - she lets us do just about anything! Thank you so much for your prayers!

This just breaks my heart. I will keep her in my prayers that she can build her immunities up and get through this.

Hi Julie, my Lucy had a very similar problem. She's a rescue and no one knew her history. She would itch and her feet were so messed up I couldn't take her for walks.

I put her immediately on Vibrant Pets. A second vet found she had a skin infection and gave her the steroids/antibiotics. She also has allergies. I had a laundry list of things to do!

-Vibrant Pets
-Vitamin E 1xday
-Salmon Oil 1xday
-Ester C 1xday
-Benadryl as needed for the itching.

I soaked her feet a few times a week in baking soda/warm water and always kept them dry.

It took a few months but Lucy is doing great. Her fur has grown back on her feet and she's even able to take long walks and play in the grass, something she wasn't able to do before.

My vet also told me her immune system was a mess (she was on the streets and nearly starved to death) which is where the vitamins and Ester C came in.

I hope that helps. Do not give up, if needed try another vet.
