Pododermatitis

Hi Julie, my Lucy had a very similar problem. She's a rescue and no one knew her history. She would itch and her feet were so messed up I couldn't take her for walks.

I put her immediately on Vibrant Pets. A second vet found she had a skin infection and gave her the steroids/antibiotics. She also has allergies. I had a laundry list of things to do!

-Vibrant Pets
-Vitamin E 1xday
-Salmon Oil 1xday
-Ester C 1xday
-Benadryl as needed for the itching.

I soaked her feet a few times a week in baking soda/warm water and always kept them dry.

It took a few months but Lucy is doing great. Her fur has grown back on her feet and she's even able to take long walks and play in the grass, something she wasn't able to do before.

My vet also told me her immune system was a mess (she was on the streets and nearly starved to death) which is where the vitamins and Ester C came in.

I hope that helps. Do not give up, if needed try another vet.

Hi Sheri,

Thanks so much for the hints - I've had a bad cold and haven't been good about checking my emails, etc. This really gives me hope. Maggie hasn't been for a walk in almost a month - we have snow and ice and her feet are swollen. We have to keep her in collars so she can't chew on her feet. She's on antibiotics and pain pills - we're worried she's going to get so weak. We encourage her to walk around the house but she's limping badly. We aren't giving up - will try the vitamins - they all make sense. She's also on a prescription lipid that we apply weekly to her skin. It's quite new - the doctor is interested in the results because he hasn't used it before.

Again, thank you for your thoughtfulness and caring. So glad your furbaby is doing better. It must be a joy for you to see her running around again!

Hugs,
Julie

Hi Julie just checking in to see how your pup is doing. Hope you are seeing some improvement. keeping her in our prayers.

Maggie Mae is hanging on - we have an appointment with a dermatologist in Seattle for next Monday - Feb. 7. It's quite a trip for us - hope we don't get lost! - but it's really necessary. She's taking Vita Pet in applesauce and eating, but not up to walking much. I've tried to take her walking on the carpet but she lies down after a short time. Her pads look mishapen and swollen - she's on pain pills but she's so sad with her e-collar or tube on. She doesn't understand why she has to wear collars when all she wants to do is chew on her paws.

Thanks so much for your kindness and prayers. She is such a lovely little angel dog. :(

Hiya Julie, how'd it go with Maggie's appt? My girls hate the ecollar, too. I remember once when Kaylee had surgery on her eye, we had the collar on and Fiona helped her escape, lol!

I forgot to mention I also picked up some no-chew spray back when Lucy was at her worst and sprayed it on her paws (it was the kind that was safe to apply to their skin). I used it on Lucy's paws which slowed down her chewing quite a bit.

Hope it went well for you. It's so sad to see our little ones sick.

We just got back from seeing the Dermatology Specialist in Seattle - he knew right away what she had - it's Hepatocutaneous Disease with superficial necrolytic dermatitis. From what we understand, her liver is failing and she needs to get amino acids as often as possible. The pododermatitis was just a symptom of the underlying disease. The news has been so sad and shocking, but now we know how to take care of her and keep her as comfortable as possible for as long as possible.

Thank you all for caring.

I have been reading your posts, I too wish you would have received better news. Prayers and positive thoughts coming your way.

How heartbreaking. Sorry to hear about this. Thankfully you have answers so you can make her comfortable and treat what's going on. Not knowing can be so frustrating. Hugs to Maggie.

So sorry you got such bad news but at least now you know and can make things as good for her as possible. Hugs for Maggie.

Julie, I am so very sorry. I will keep you and Maggie in my prayers and thoughts.
