This is what I use. I just run the clipper downward the direction the hair grows, so I take hair off in thin layers until I get the desired amount. This site is sold out at the moment but you can get them several places including ebay.

I broke down and bought a clippers, its a pretty good one, and I did what you stated with the clippers, and it made a nice chute, little by little. I did use a scissors to trim a bit closer, only because I am such a chicken that I am going to burn the bum.
