Possible Low Thyroid

Everything came back normal with Bailey's full thyroid work up. The vet said everything was high-normal. In fact, her free T4 was actually slightly above normal at 4.2 (normal range is 1-4).

He said that is fine for now and we will follow up with another free T4 in 6 months to a year. If her Free T4 goes up even further then we will look into hyperthyroidism.

So strange going from discussing low thyroid to high thyroid, but I'm glad everything is normal.

I know absolutely nothing about thyroid issues...but is it possible that even slightly elevated could be an issue that is proving symptomatic?

I just read a few notes about hyperthyroidism in dogs and one note said that a dog could be " irritable and hyperactive because of the excess hormones".

I wouldn't consider that normal...but that is just me who is far from an educated veterinarian to even make that kind of a judgement.

I did deal with thyroid issues for so many years with Cedar, that I do know how small number changes can change a dog's entire behavior.

If I were you, I would e-mail all the numbers (including previous tests) to Dr. Dodds and see how she interprets the results.

I too think that shipping the info to Dr. Dodds would be a good idea. I have already figured that depending on Tinsel's results that I would be emailing her as well.

I was recommended to dr. Dodd from here and she has been wonderful. And I'v been having issues since we rescued max almost three years. I dealt with here only a few months back and his thyroid has finally gone up from 1.5 to 4.4 and now we're bringing it down to 3.5 but max has a lot of other issues.
Our main problem is with eveything going on he always acts the same!!!!

Uh oh! That's exactly how it started with Bacca. We woke up and he had a huge lump underneath his jaw My first thought was a bee sting but that made no sense because he was inside

So off to emerg we go. They started antyhing from an abscess tooth to cancer.

So test after test, and hypo-thyroid is the diagnosis - we've been dealing with this for more than 2 years know. Subsequent to that Bacca also also significant liver issues that we are monitoring.

Good news is that it is treatable. Bad news is that because of his condition and his meds, I don't think will ever be the dog he could be. Mostly he goes through life in laid-back mode. While he can get excited from time to time, and still gets zoomies in the morning, he no longer plays with toys and often looks at treats with a sneer.

His weight gain is stable. He is now maintaining at 30 lbs give or take. But he is tall and big boned to begin with, so I actually think this is a good weight for him.

I Emailed Dr. Dodds info on my dog and copies of her test results. She said my dog's slightly high free T4 is perfectly normal for her age and breed.

That makes me feel so much better. So I will just run another free T4 in a year like my vet suggested.
