Possible Pain...Somewhere??

Sadie has been doing something funny, I'm not sure what it is or if this should be posted under Behaviour, not health.

Sadie has always been funny about being walked on. I used to think she was a suck about pain, but now I think she's just really smart. If she thinks that you might walk on her she'll yelp to let you know she's there long before being stepped on.

The thing that concerns me is this, lately she's been yelping when she's not being stepped on. A couple of times when she was jumping off the couch her back food slipped between the cushions and she yelped, she was standing in the kitchen and let out a loud yelp at the same time my husband made a loud noise (but I thought her yelp came before the noise). A couple of times I've seen her just standing there and she let out a yelp.

I can't figure out if she's just startling herself (often she'll be standing near something when she yelps, perhaps she brushes against things and startles herself) or if there's something bothering her. When she 'startles' she looks toward her rear end, toward her leg although I haven't noticed if its always the same side. I was grooming her the other night and using the dremel on her nails when she jumped and looked behind her like something hurt her. I wasn't holding the dremel up to her when she jumped and she looked back toward the opposite side that I was working on, so I don't think I applied it to long.

I've felt her all over, poked her, bent and put pressure on all of her legs and feet and pressed on her belly but I can't find anything that hurts. She's not lame, drinks well but not excessively and has lots of energy. Her only other problem is persistent diarrhea (talked about in the Sadie has Diarrhea again thread) which she's recently had blood work for. She also had regular blood work done a week ago and the results came back normal.

Has anyone else experienced anything like this? I'm starting to get concerned because it seems to be happening more frequently, but maybe its just me being paranoid and she's just a jumpy dog?

sounds like something is scaring her. Or she is startling herself. Maybe she is seeing something you can't see who knows. I mean dogs have better vision and hearing then we do.

Unless b/c halloween is coming around you might have ghosts haha.

But on a serious note I honestly wouldn't be able to tell you b/c I never experienced yelping of that sort. All I know was when my sheltie died 2 days later my dad got me my mixed dog and well, she used to sorta play by herself in the corners that my sheltie used too and it always looked like she was playing with someone that we couldn't see. Weird thing was she used to do things at times that was so out of character that only my sheltie did. Keep in mind they NEVER met eachother. I personally believed that my mixed was communicating with my sheltie.

Don't worry -- Layla does that, too. If you look like you're going to step on her, she yelps like you cut off her paw! :eek2:

Still think there's something going on...

I'm still worried about her, she's still yelping and jumping for seemingly no reason. The other day she was lying in the grass after running around when all of a sudden she yelped and jumped like she'd been stung. There was nothing there of course.

This is the first time its happened after exercise so I think its a coincidence and not exercise related but I think there's something else going on with her. I'll be talking to our vet probably today or tomorrow so I'll mention it to her then.

While feeling her did you check her nails? bent out of shape or crooked for example. While this doesn't explain all you have described its one possibility. I thought of that when you said 'her back foot slipped between the cushions'

Good suggestion!

Her nails seem fine though. I keep them well trimmed and she's yelped both before and after I last trimmed them. Her nails themselves don't seem to bother her and all of them are straight.

I wonder if she had a thorn or picker embedded in between the pads on one of her feet. You wouldn't neccessarily see it due to all of the fur in there. Hmmmm, makes you think. Hope she is ok.

I can check but I doubt it. I recently trimmed her feet and she didn't mind me handling them. When I started thinking she might have a problem I started pressing in between her pads and couldn't find any sore spots. She's also not lame, she has no problems with running and jumping. You'd think a pricker or thorn would make her limp. I'll check again though, since I currently don't have any other ideas. Thanks for the suggestion, it always seems to be something with this poor pup

When my old Timber would do that, the first thing I would do is check his bum closely. He would either have a dried dingleberry that was pulling the hair or have a dog version of diaper rash (he used to suffer from diarrhea pretty bad).

As he could not reach his bum with his snout, it always looked like he was going for his back leg.

That's an idea, since Sadie has been having diarrhea on and off for months. However she hasn't had diarrhea since early last Thursday and she doesn't look raw. I'll keep that in mind though, hopefully it's that and she'll be better soon
