ok- wow. I would consider letting Cranberry jump 18 in. He's almost 18 in at the shoulder.
UKA heights look similar to AKC (12, 16, 20, 24, 26).
I very much doubt he'd be competing in KC- there's no way I'd jump him at 26 in..............
KC and Beachside would have Dixie jumping 18- probably not... she's ok at 16in and she's just under 16 in at the shoulder.
Jocu would jump 18, 16 and 18- he could probably handle it... he's not quite 17 in at the shoulder
depending on where the exactly 14" dog would jump (although Destin's one measurement had him at 13.75 in), he'd be in trouble too if he had to jump 18 in. he could handle 14, 12, 14.

I have never, ever seen a sheltie competing in KC large although I'm sure some measure out of medium. It will be interesting to see if/when the much desired 4th standard height becomes officially recognised whether any 'large' shelties do compete. Personally I think there is room for a 'micro' height too as tiny dogs such as Chihuahuas, Papillions and lots of Jack Russels jump well over their shoulder height in small and are unfairly disadvantaged against top end small dogs like Epic. There is less of a call for this as fewer dogs are affected but I wonder if it would encourage a greater variety of toy breeds if they were competing against other tinies. In an ideal world it would be lovely if a height/weight/build matrix was used to determine the competition jumping height because there are lots of dogs whose height says one thing but build says another. I love watching your agility competitions in the US because the diversity of breeds seems to be much greater than in the UK and I wonder if that has to do with more height categories and the option to go to Preferred.

There is a need for a 4th height at KC, precisely for the reason Calliesmom states. Cranberry would be jumping a whole 8in higher than his height.
Some of the other independent organisations around here (T&A, Agility Ability) are really generous with their heights and Merlin jumps small with them (35cm). However, they were once part of BAA (British Agility Association) which encouraged fairer heights and no dog jumping above shoulder height. Sadly, due to internal politics, BAA is pretty much defunct. Shame, as it had a good ethos and it was also the organisation that broke the Kennel Club's monopoly on agility competitions. Prior to BAA forming in the early 2000s, there was no other agility organisation except for KC. Hard to imagine now we have such diversity.

never would have gotten into agility if that was the only choice........
my friend's Irish Setter only jumps 24" in AKC......
just can't see Cran competing against that.....

So if my dog is exactly 17" at the withers, she'd have to jump 16"? She could do it, but that's as high as I'd want to jump her. We're only jumping 12" now.

Merlin would be jumping 16in at AKC, which would be lower for him than what we run at KC (17.7in). Before I went to KC he used to jump small which is 13.75in, I did wonder how he would cope with the extra 4 inches, but he didn't even seem to notice. Though he loves running small when he can (certain independent comps let him run small), he goes so much faster!
