Prescription food

Under challenged immune system

By the theory, it's not a lack of immune system, but an immune system designed to fight parasites with nothing to do.....

This is an absolutely brilliant idea. We do take our dogs out of nature when they live with us indoors and eat manufactured food. And an immune system geared to parasites in nature may well become unbalanced in the absence of 'critters.'

I'm going to read up on this theory. It tickles my intuition.

Still, my Whisper is 13 and thrives on an RX diet.

Thanks for the interesting idea.

In context

Thank you for, posting this fascinating article.

I think that most pet owners focus on their dog, their breed. But this article shows that we, and our dogs, are the sum of the evolutionary process--which includes parasites. The immune system needs something to 'fight.' I get it.

Wow. That's some perspective.

Now, I'm beginning to understand the link between a raw food diet and immune health. We always rejected raw food in fear of germs and parasites. Hmmm ....

Remember the saying "sick as a dog", dogs have been experiencing stomach issues for a long time. So I do think we are more aware when they have stomach issues. I address diarrhea before an owner of a short haired dog who doesn't have to do bottom baths and carry baby wipes. The alternative is that the better quality foods we are giving them is making them sick and we should go back to the crappy foods we used to feed 40 years ago.

The prescription diets are actually really good. Yes they are more expensive than some brands, but there is a lot of work gone into them. Over here they are no more expensive than the premium branded foods which didn't have all the R&D involved. I was sceptical with the dental kibble but its been amazing for my cats. I had my tabby's bad teeth cleaned 2 yrs ago. She's been on a small amount of Dental since (only 1/8 cup per day) and teeth are perfect. I've put the dogs on it now (1/4 cup) and I'm already seeing results.

This has been really interesting and informative. I had wondered why my parents and grandparents and their generations weren't wearing a path back and forth to the vet, like I seem to be sometimes! Maybe I fuss too much compared to previous generations' approach to dog health management. Lots of food for thought.

Anyway, we've had the RC Gastro Low Fat biscuits since yesterday... very early days but so far so good!
