Pumpkin Diet

Just cutting back 1 tablespoon or 2 with both meals can make the difference between loose stools and good stools. It is recommended to cut back on the food if they get loose stools, on the back of some of the kibble bags. Hope things work out well for you.

My dogs get veggies everyday, esp pumpkin which they love. I usually mix in some yoghurt with the vegies. I do cook for them though most evenings but when I give them canned dinner I also add vegies so they have something fresh in with it. They love their (cooked) vegies so I will keep giving them everyday. My vet thinks their diet is good and they are healthy.

Besides pumpkin, I heard chicken and rice. I don't know if white rice, or brown rice is better. I have a feeling its brown, the brown is suppose to better for humans.

Anyway someone with an older sheltie is going through some runny problems because of their age, and she does the pumpkin, chicken and rice.

Thanks!

Thanks everyone.

I think I'll give him one or two table spoons of pumpkin a day. It has been two days since he had his pumpkin (which he loves:smile2:), his stool is so much firmer. I'm also going to get probiotics tablets or powder this weekend. Nothing is too good for my baby!

My Sweetie has had loose stools and I started feeding her one teaspoon of pumpkin on her food daily along with switching to a food lower in protien and fat than the food she was eating. I did this gradual and now she has nice stools and no more dirty bum! :biggrin2:

I give Snickers 2-3 tablespoons of pumpkin in his food everyday. IS that bad?? it was originally for loose stool but he loves it . IS it ok as an everyday thing?? and i thought it would add some moisture to his food as well .

I had no idea yogurt was good for a dog....(learning everyday).. does that go in his food as well or can we sit on the couch and share some?
Also is their any kind of yogurts to avoid??

I gave my setter pumpkin in his food everyday of his life. He was a bottomless pit, and the pumkin seemed to fill him up a bit more without the extra calories.

I would make sure that the yogurt you use has no added sugar. I get the Stonyfield plain yogurt. I think it is especially good for dogs that tend to get infections (ie. UTIs) or that get yeast in their ears (more the floppy eared dogs).

As long as his stomach can handle it, there's nothing wrong giving pumpkin every day. When it comes to yogurt, just stay away from those with artificial sweeteners. You can either add it to his regular meal or use it as a treat. It's also a good idea to feed a bit of yogurt with active cultures after a course of antibiotics. It helps restore the correct balance of flora in the gut.

Megan gets a little Kefir in her snack at night...It's a non-fat, plain, organic, probiotic yogurt drink. I am sure most non-fat plain yogurts will do fine, but this one is of higher quality ingredients. :wink2: Oh and it's gluten free as well..
