Puppy freedom

Then you wouldn’t like my house lol...I have a crate, and an ex pen and a huge puppy pen that breaks down to smaller ones oh and 2 soft sided crates lol. No way would I trust Blueberry loose at night with Piper and Finnie. Also great when they have an injury to keep them settled. Of course as they show me how much I can trust them their freedom increases...Blueberry is rarely crated when I’m home.
 
If you have several dogs, it is probably a little different.

But even when I had both an adult GSD
and a puppy it was no different.:wink2:

I had the advantage of retirement and so Willow wasn't left alone much but I am a strong believer in crating and Willow is perfectly comfortable with it and was from the start. I also penned off a bit of the yard so she quickly associated being in the pen with going to the bathroom. Willow had four accidents inside and that was it. Like Lisa, I'm sure I was the one trained and not Willow so much at the beginning but that dynamic changed over time. For us it was, wake up - go out, play - go out, eat - go out, drink - go out. The thing that was most different about Willow is her accidents were really spaced apart so I was thinking each one must have been the last one. My other dogs had a shorter time before they were perfectly reliable but during training they made more messes than Willow ever did.

Today was the first time Blueberry actually went into her crate all on her own to have a nap...it’s a good feeling when they’re comfortable in it, means I’ve done a good job teaching her what a great place her crate is. I’m sure that piece of dried sweet potato she gets every night has helped too lol. Tonight I said go in your crate and off she ran...treat time!

that so sounds like mine- don't stand in the way at mealtimes/bedtime.....:winkgrin:
 
Grace had a crate until she was about 3 years old. It stood her in good stead as it was her safe place when she came on holidays with us. It was her bedroom, her playroom, in fact whatever we wanted it to be. And it gives you peace of mind knowing your dog is safe whilst you attend to other things. It also helped her become comfortable with being enclosed as we prefer to transport her in a dog cage whenever travelling. Whenever we said 'time for bed' she would trundle off to her crate. Even now, 'time for bed' means going to that exact spot where her crate used to be.
 
Koko was crated for 5.5 years, Benson for 1 before they came to me. I kept their crates and they used them here voluntarily for a short time, but once they were comfortable here and given their choice, both stopped using them, so I put them in the garage. Fil used his as a puppy and would nap in it, but he too decided to quit.
