Another place to "haunt" is Kiiji.

I go there from time to time, and found a post from someone looking to breed her female sheltie.

I haven't figured out how to respond to her yet.

Have you asked her if she's willing and ready to face the possibility of losing her female? I know it's not common, but after reading someone's blog about losing their female who just gave birth. Gawd, it makes you wanna cry. I bet she's not thinking about what could happen to Mom during birth. I always like to use death to scare people first.

***transcript of Petco Incedent from the AP***

Male voice, "Excuse me miss.. any idea where we can get some drugs for our dog? He's pissing all over, marking his territory. And he keeps mounting the ol' lady..{sound of someone spitting into a spatoon)

Susan,"My that's strange. Have you removed his fuzzy dice yet? That should fix all those issues.."

Man, in an excited high pitch,"You want me to have a dog that's all spegatti and no meatballs?' (s squeak of disbeleif from the ol' lady..)

Susan,"Well it would be the best thing for him.. he would be better adjusted to live in your home and you would reduce the chance of certain types of cancer..Sir, don't roll up into a ball like that.. I was talking about the dog.. not you.."

Man, eyes glossed over..barely audible,"Not his nuggets of joy!!"

Susan,"Sir..get up.. it's ok..stop crying.."

Maybe Susan should've told the man they make prosthetics for the male dogs....for those men who cant handle it.

This was my response:

I’m not a breeder, so I’m not concerned about competition. But I am a Sheltie owner of two. I have a deep affiliation for this breed, having had Shelties for most of my life.

I am committed to this breed and any breed, for that matter. I can’t help but get concerned when people without experience decide to breed and whelp their dogs.

I don’t want to alarm you, but you say you love your pup so much…do you have any idea of the problems that can occur during whelping to your lady? There will be no vet sitting next to your girl, helping her through the delivery. You’ll need to do that yourself. Are you up to that?

Even experienced breeders have issues that they cannot deal with and either the Mom or some of the pups die. The breeder of one of pups just lost two pups from two separate litters…and she knew what she was doing!

And of course, one for you and one for your sister…what about the other 3 or 4 pups you might end up with? How will you evaluate whether or not you are sending them off to good homes. And do you know anything about raising puppies? There are all kind of issues around weaning them and transitioning them to solid food.

Please, please, please, reconsider this

So when do puppies go "on sale" like a carton of milk from the grocery store? Grrrr! I wouldn't respect the breeders that bred them simply because of the fact they can't be bothered to find a home for their puppies!

I recall getting a postcard mailer in the mail one year. They were having a sale on puppies (pet store in the local mall). I wanted to cry. It was Christmas season and they were "discounting" the dogs. Bring in the flyer and get $200 off. or something obscene like that.

Y'know. I'll be honest. I have no clue where or what kind of puppy mills we have here in CA. Not because there are none, but because I'm that ignorant to it (because I found some good Sheltie breeders and have only asked them for referrals). I feel like I should know the puppy mills, to warn people. But then again, I think most people do what they want. And in the "I want it now" society, they don't care. I know a lot of people with pet store dogs, designer dogs, dog "accessories". I feel sorry for the dog. Some are well loved and cared for. Others, not so much.

Sigh. Why can't people be responsible. Pets or animals....we as humans should at least try to keep them "healthy".

Hahaha, I am sure you know that Strider made up this whole conversation right??

Yes. I know. I was just being silly and adding on yet another "lame" idea, invented by men, for male dogs I'm sure. But then again, maybe my boys do miss their, um, maleness.

I went to a local Pets Unlimited this weekend, and nearly fell over noticing a lot of 'designer breed' puppies... When I ask where are they coming from, I get a generic oh, we buy them from Ontario... as if that answers my questions...
I mean WHO IN THEIR RIGHT MIND would pay $1600 for a Shi-poo??? and another $1300 for a Papillion puppy, and I think Chihuahua mixes must pay top dollar... they had a Yorkei-Chi for a whooping $1900 etc.., (thank god, no Shelties nor SheltiePoos, etc) There was also the cutest Pug I felt sorry for...
Like, who pays THAT amount of money when you can get a dog with papers and history, a breeder to give you history and assistance??? FOr LESS money for a pet quality pup, NO doubts!
I don't get that part at all! It can't be about the finances!

I also asked inconvenient questions about their salt water fish, who of course they also get from Ontario *groan* I am surprised I wasn't asked to leave :)

You people. I got my puppy mill dog for MUCH cheaper. $250 cash. They are so taking you for a ride.

I'm JOKING, by the way. Well, I really did pay $250 for Smudge, but I didn't buy from a puppy mill on purpose.

Really though! You can get a puppy from a legit breeder for much cheaper than what some of those puppy mills are charging!

Ain't that the truth. I want to choke when I see Shelties in pet stores going for $1500. And of course, i want to then rescue them. Maybe it's a good thing I don't have money.
