Puppy Mills!

Jenny,

Thank you for all you did with Tipper. Some people have no clue. I have an ex co-worker(tech) who got 2 chis from a pet store. The one 3yrs old had epilepsy, liver issues, allergies and severe patella porblems that reqired surgery, the other also had patella issues and congential kidney failure and was dying at 2yrs of age. She wanted a long haired chi and I told her I would help her find a good breeder just let me know. One day,she told me she had seen a long haired blue tri chi in a local Petland and she was going back to look it after work. I asked her if she was out of her mind. I was so mad I couldn't believe it. Didn't she know pet store puppies were from mills. She had 2 dogs with severe health issues and she was considering getting another.:eek2:

Well, she went and got the dog. Paid $900(it was on sale so she got a deal) and it had a hernia, luxating patellas already at 9wks, an open fontella the size of the tip of my index finger. She couldn't help it, she was so cute. :( She left the clinic several months later. Don't know if the little pup developed any other issues(I hope not) but reading your story brought back that memory.:(

I was recently contacted by someone on this forum who had run into the same puppymill that I was fighting last year (puppyofmydreams.com) and went through a horrible experience with her pup.

It's heartbreaking, because, I thought I had made some progress on the file, but looks like they were never successful in shutting them down....and so it continues!

All we can do is to continue to educate, educate, educate. I know personally I swore I would spend more time on the Yahoo dogs and Kiiji to do just that, but I just never got around to it. And so it continues.

So my hats off to all of you who make a difference out there, and fight the fight, and don't give up!

Bless you!

Wow! I was curious for myself about the website puppyofmydreams and their they are in all their "glory". I didn't look real close at them, but what did you go thru with them?

Well, she went and got the dog. Paid $900(it was on sale so she got a deal) (

Ohh, Shelli, I so understand how you feel!!! Doesn't that just make you mad!!! We have a Petland by our house too and they always have their Puppy Sale sign up. They call me the Sheltie lady because if I stop in for my high end treats and food, I pay special attention to the Shelties (I can't tell a lie, I do love them so). But they start their dogs off at $2000 or $1800 and then offer 35% - 50% off and people think they are getting some great deal. They also spew the "We don't buy from Puppy Mills" line "All our dogs have their papers". Right, you mean the papers the owner of the puppy mill made on his printer??? (Thank goodness we have a new high end store called Scraps, that doesn't sell animals, right next to the house, I don't have to go in there anymore.) When I stopped in last month they told me they had a new little Sheltie girl in the back, did I want to see her? When I asked why she was in the back they said, "She hasn't been eating anything for about 4 days, but as soon as a week is up the vet will put her back out and she will be 50% off. We can call you and you can have her then, we will even give you an extra 10% off, becasue we know you love Shelties." Wow, a whole extra 10% off a really sick dog!?! What a deal. :( Too bad I am going to pass it up. (But boy did I feel bad for the dog).

People freak out over what I paid for Kai'a but they think that $1000 for a Petland, questionable breed puppy mill dog is perfectly fine, because it's a Sale!!! I paid less than that for Kai'a and I got a great dog, with a wonderful Sire and Dam and the life long support of my breeder and her family that have been showing their dogs for 20 plus years. I would pay more for that any day.

And on a side note (my dander is up today) I also hate all these "designer dogs". There were reasons why dogs were interbreed/mixed. It should not be done today to make cute, toy sized animals. I hate the "Puggles" the most as Beagles and Pugs have no business being tossed in together with their personal health concerns. (My Sammy was a sweet Beagle) But the people who churn out these "hot" mixes try to use the age old line of "it's how we got the dogs we have today". I could go on .... but I think I have said enough for one day.

For the betterment of the Breed ... do people not get that anymore. Dogs are not to be mass produced, like ShamWow's or cans of Coke in many different flavors.

See that the thing, for 1800-2000 is more than you would pay for a show quality dog for most of the top kennels in the country and have all the perks you outline.

A lady in my Open obedience class was looking for a new puppy. She had a Std Poodle and was trying decide if she was going to get another poodle or maybe a golden. In the course of the talking she mentioned that a performance Standard was $1200(top breeder) and Golden(top obedience line) was $1000. We told her for $1600 she could get a BYB Goldendoodle. She was not amused. Don't even get me started on designer breeds.

BTW she got a Standard. Sire Ch, Dam CH UD, full boat health testing and lifetime support from the breeder.

I purchased Megan from a very high quality local breeder here in Houston, Tx, recognized across the state and surrounding areas. But I won't tell you all how much I paid for her, you'd probably gasp :uhoh:. It seems in the state of Texas, to buy a well bred Golden Retriever is approx $1,500.00, I know I called ALL of the good ones. A WELL bred Sheltie is not much cheaper, trust me!!

I believe you!!! No gasp or surprised look of shock and awe on my part.

I really wanted to adopt or rescue, but one of our cats can NOT be vaccinated due to a life threatening reaction to the shots, so I had to be overly cautious of what I brought in:(

I've got a couple of threads on this outfit already.

To keep it short

I first ran across them after Timber died and I was looking for a new pup. I found them on Kiiji. They advertised about 100 different dogs, but being curious I probed deeper. I asked them about seeing the home, etc. All the right questions. The answer I got was that the pups are fostered out. Puppy Broker!

They came back onto my radar a few months later. I can't remember why, but I got township by-law and SPCA involved and they worked together to try to shut it down. Unfortunately, no luck. It's still doing business and a person contacted me in the last couple of days who had a really bad experience and wants to resurrect the file.

Bottom line is this:

- If the breeder won't let you visit their home and meet at least Mom....run as fast as you can
- If the breeder advertises more than 2 breeds....run as fast as you can
- If the breeder has more than say a dozen pups available, run as fast as you can
- If the breeder says anything about designer dogs, run and don't stop.

And then keep running to the SPCA and syc them on the breeder. And cross your fingers. These guys are impossible to catch. Their our puppy mills that actually breed the dogs, and then there are the "brokers". I was dealing with a broker.

I know what you mean. My SIL brought a Spoodle last year from a petshop - she wanted to get some weight off by walking the dog, oh and it would be nice for the kids. The dog had been there for a few weeks and the pet shop person said he would be put down soon if she didnt buy her. Even with a discount the pup cost as much as my shelties combined.

Now my brother says the dog has to go because its harassing the chickens. I mean the dog has spaniel in it, what did they expect, but they figured a spoodle is different to a spaniel. I didnt help the case at xmas when my dogs kept helping him herd the chickens in the coop - he why his dog couldnt do that! Well, deh they are herding dogs, very well trained and aren't teenagers!

I think they are waiting for me to say I will take their dog in. But I really dont need another teenage dog. Problem is, where they live there are so many designer dogs dumped that the shelters do have a higher euth rate.
