Puppy not cuddly?

My pup (5 months) is just getting to the point where she will come up to us to and lay down next to us. SHE STILL NEVER comes to us when WE WANT TO CUDDLE! It is all about HER! Each night when it is time to go in the crate, we hold her for 5 mintues or so rub, her tell her "IT's ok. Just settle and rub her all over!" Then she goes right in to bed. It is becoming a routine! She used to squirm and now she doesn't. Just this week she started coming up and lies down next to our feet and waits to be loved. And it only lasts about 2-3 mins. but it is better than nothing. My husband loves to lie down on the floor and play fetch. When she gets tired or has had enough she will lay down next to him.

Be patient! It will come with maturity! I too used to hold the treat in the hand or a chewy to get her to lie still for a few mintues of loving! Give it time!
 
My first girl who I had for 15 years was my shadow and completely devoted to me but did not enjoy cuddling. My second dog was Jazz and again, he was completely devoted and a happy, happy dog, and he enjoyed belly rubs and grooming, but did not cuddle. Ellie, my current girl is 9 months old and LOVES to cuddle and watch tv! She is completely opposite to the other two I had, so I concur with the others that it is personality. Your baby is also very young and full of energy, so he may still change. :)
 
Welcome, welcome! You're getting good information here. I have a new puppy, Beckon, and he's all boy. "No time for that mushy stuff, Mom, gotta go play!!! Slurp, lick, love ya, gone!!" :biggrin2:
 
my dog patches was like that. and then he turned 3 next thing i know all he does is sprawl himself all over me lol and the floor....and the couch...and dont forget the bed! it should pass sooner or later just dont give up on the cuddles.
 
I believe it's just a matter of personality. Caliber ever since I brought him home has been cuddly. He sleeps right beside me with his head on my pillow every single night, and never puts up a fight for a chance to be close to me. In fact...he's laying n my foot right now...

Replyka on the other hand - well, she's a handful. A real wild child. She rarely likes to be held, she doesn't like to be kissed, she'll tolerate being petted, but to have her actually lay down with you or sit with you...very rarely happens. And they're from the same Mom and Dad!! She is still young - only 5 months old - so I think it just might take her a while to simmer down. Her personality is just goofy all around, so it might take some time, but I don't mind. I love both my dogs equally, but Caliber is always going to be my baby...they really counterbalance one another! :biggrin2:

It may take some time to get him close to you, or it may not happen at all! You just gotta wait and see I suppose!!
 
I have to agree with what everyone said so far. Puppies are too busy to be petted and cuddle.

The sheltie I grew up with was definitely not a cuddlier. She wouldn't even sleep with me. She would only lay on my bed when I petted her and when I stopped, she jumped off and slept on a pillow next to my bed.

My 3 and half week old sheltie puppy has no time to cuddle. She'd rather run around and play with her toys. She does let me pet her and loves tummy rubs. She'll give you lots of kisses on your face, but no where else. She actually will not sleep anywhere, but her crate. I realized that when she gets super hyper and bouncing off the walls, that means she's tired. I put her in her crate and she goes right to sleep. I don't know why she does that. I would love for her to just cuddle up next to me and take a nap too.
 
Will the cuddling change after being spayed?

My pup is due to be spayed soon. Will her willingness to cuddle be affected by that at all. Right now she will not cuddle unless I have treats for her
 
No I dont think the spaying makes any difference. Tully became affectionate after she was spayed - but I think that was more to do with her getting older. Alternatively maybe it just help to settle them a bit without having all those hormones raging around. If only we could spay human teenage girls.

Ariel isn't a cuddler either. If I have her on my lap, mainly to keep her out of trouble for a few minutes while I'm doing something, she will growl. Just sit and growl. It's funny. I had her on my lap at the vets while we were discussing food and she sat and growled the whole time. The vet just shook her head and said, "She's got a real attitude." LOL

I have discovered she loves neck massages so she will sit still for those. Otherwise, she's in motion all the time.

My first Sheltie was velcro. If I was touching her in any way she didn't move a muscle. She'd lay in my lap for hours while I was watching TV.
